Unaccustomed As We Are
''Unaccustomed as We Are'' is a short comedy film produced by Hal Roach and directed by Lewis R. Foster. It was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on May 4, 1929. This picture was the first "all-talking" Laurel and Hardy comedy. The working title was ''Their Last Word''.''The Laurel & Hardy Book,'' edited by Leonard Maltin, Curtis Books (New York), 1973, p. 215. . The title was changed to ''Unaccustomed as We Are'', a play on the familiar phrase "Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..." Story Oliver Hardy brings his friend Stan Laurel home to dinner, as a surprise guest. Mrs. Hardy (Mae Busch) is sick and tired of cooking for her husband's lowlife pals and, after giving Mr. Hardy a piece of her mind, she walks out. Left to his own devices, Hardy resolves to cook the dinner himself. A comedy film is a category of film which emphasizes humor. These films are designed to make the audience laugh through amusement. Leonard Michael Maltin (born December 18, 1950) is an American film critic and film historian, as well as an author of several mainstream books on cinema, focusing on nostalgic, celebratory narratives. He is perhaps best known for his book of film capsule reviews, ''Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide'', published annually from 1969 to 2014. Early life Maltin was born in New York City, the son of singer Jacqueline ( née Gould; 1923–2012) and Aaron Isaac Maltin (1915–2002), a lawyer and immigration judge. Mae Busch (born Annie May Busch; 18 June 1891 – 20 April 1946) was an Australian-born actress who worked in both silent and sound films in early Hollywood. In the latter part of her career she appeared in many Laurel and Hardy comedies, frequently playing Hardy's shrewish wife. Professionally, he was known as "Slow Burn", owing to his ability to portray characters whose anger slowly rose in frustrating situations.
