Umm Al-Surab
Umm al-Surab (also Umm es-Surab, Umm al-Sarab) is a residential area located in the Northwestern Badia District, Mafraq Governorate, Jordan. The region belongs to the northwestern Badia district, which includes 15 districts. Its population is estimated at 4,130 people, according to the 2015 census. Mafraq
Mafraq ( ar, المفرق ''Al-Mafraq'', local dialects: ''Mafrag'' or ''Mafra''; ) is the capital city of Mafraq Governorate in Jordan, located 80 km to the north from the capital Amman in crossroad to Syria to the north and Iraq to the east. It had 56,340 inhabitants in 2004. History Mafraq was first settled in the 4th century BC. It is located about 17 km west of the historic Nabataeans, Nabataean and Byzantine Empire, Byzantine town of Umm el-Jimal, which was built in the 1st century. The city was first named "Fudain", which comes from the word for fortress in Arabic. The city gained significant importance after the establishment of the Hejaz Railway connecting Istanbul to Medina. It was renamed to the current name Mafraq by the Ottoman Empire, Ottoman Turks, which means "cross roads". Mafraq was the location of a British military base and airport from the early 20th century. Byzantine
The Byzantine Empire, also referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantium, was the continuation of the Roman Empire primarily in its eastern provinces during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, when its capital city was Constantinople. Mafraq Governorate
Mafraq ( ar, محافظة المفرق ''Muhāfaẓat al-Mafraq'', local dialects ''Mafrag'' or ''Mafra' '') is one of the governorates of Jordan, located to the north-east of Amman, capital of Jordan. It has a population of 287,300 (2010 estimate) making up 4.5% of Jordan's population. Its capital is Mafraq, which is known for its military bases.
