Umeå Old Prison
Construction for Umeå old prison ( sv, Umeå gamla fängelse or ''länscellfängelset'') completed in 1861. The prison was one of few buildings that did not burn down at the Umeå city fire, city fire of 1888. Thus, it is one of Umeå's oldest remaining buildings and is listed buildings in Sweden, listed building since 1992. The prison housed inmates until 1981 and during the 1980s and 1990s theater plays were organized there. In 2007-2008 the prison was rebuilt into a hotel. History Umeå old prison was one of some 20 provincial prisons designed by Wilhelm Theodor Anckarsvärd, who was the architect of Swedish Prison and Probation Service, Fångvårdsstyrelsen during the years 1855-1877. These prisons were built with the American Separate system, Philadelphia system as a model, which amongst other things meant that common prison cell, cells were replaced by individual cells where prisoners would be able to contemplate their fate. Storgatan, Umeå
Storgatan ("Main Street" or literally "Great Street") is one of the longer streets in Umeå ( Sweden), about 4 kilometers long. Storgatan passes by the main city areas on the north side of Ume River. The street reaches from the old city limits at Tvärån in the west to Umeå East Station, near the Norrland's University Hospital, in the east. Along Storgatan lies a number of Umeå Municipality's historic buildings, and five of the city's major parks. On average around 8,900 vehicles per day passes on this street (2006). History When Umeå was founded in 1622, on the northern side of the Ume River, it was staked out in a grid pattern with two longitudinal streets parallel to the river and five perpendicular alleys that ran all the way to the river. Gustav Rosén
Gustav Rosén (2 April 1876 – 10 December 1942) was a Swedish newspaper owner, journalist and politician. He went to jail and he was Minister of Defence and the Governor of Västerbotten County. He is known for children's day in Umeå, beech lined country roads and temperance. Life Rosén was born in Vallsjö in 1876. He was the second of eleven children born to Per Gustaf and Christina Ottilia Andersson (born Engdahla), a railway worker and his wife. He left school when his family could no longer finance his education and turned to the military to complete it. He graduated as an officer after three years of training with excellent results, but he quickly left the army. He then worked for a number of years on the northern railway construction of the Ofotenbanan. In 1902 he married Tyra Edit Olivia Lindforss from Sävar near Umeå. ''Västerbottens-Kuriren'' (also known as VK) is a Swedish newspaper founded in 1900. It is published in Umeå, Västerbotten, Sweden. The newspaper covers regional news from the region Västerbotten (with the exception of the municipalities Mala, Norsjö and Skellefteå), with a special interest in the home town Umeå, in combination with national news and international news. Rosén ''VK'' published its first issue on 17 May 1900. The paper grew rapidly, and became the largest newspaper in the Västerbotten County in 1903 - a position it has held since. Among the early journalists involved with the newspaper was the author Astrid Väring.
