Umesh Vazirani
Umesh Virkumar Vazirani is an Indian-American academic who is the Roger A. Strauch Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and the director of the Berkeley Quantum Computation Center. His research interests lie primarily in quantum computing. Quantum Turing Machine
A quantum Turing machine (QTM) or universal quantum computer is an abstract machine used to model the effects of a quantum computer. It provides a simple model that captures all of the power of quantum computation—that is, any quantum algorithm can be expressed formally as a particular quantum Turing machine. However, the computationally equivalent quantum circuit is a more common model. Quantum Turing machines can be related to classical and probabilistic Turing machines in a framework based on transition matrices. That is, a matrix can be specified whose product with the matrix representing a classical or probabilistic machine provides the quantum probability matrix representing the quantum machine. Satish Rao
Satish Rao is an American computer scientist who is a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. Biography Satish Rao received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989 and joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 1999. Research and Awards Rao's research focuses on computational biology, graph partitioning, and single- and multi-commodity flows (maximum flow problem). Rao is an ACM Fellow (2013) and won the Fulkerson Prize with Sanjeev Arora and Umesh Vazirani in 2012 for their work on improving the approximation ratio for graph separators and related problems. Approximation Algorithm
In computer science and operations research, approximation algorithms are efficient algorithms that find approximate solutions to optimization problems (in particular NP-hard problems) with provable guarantees on the distance of the returned solution to the optimal one. Approximation algorithms naturally arise in the field of theoretical computer science as a consequence of the widely believed P ≠ NP conjecture. Under this conjecture, a wide class of optimization problems cannot be solved exactly in polynomial time. Grover's Algorithm
In quantum computing, Grover's algorithm, also known as the quantum search algorithm, refers to a quantum algorithm for unstructured search that finds with high probability the unique input to a black box function that produces a particular output value, using just O(\sqrt) evaluations of the function, where N is the size of the function's domain. It was devised by Lov Grover in 1996. The analogous problem in classical computation cannot be solved in fewer than O(N) evaluations (because, on average, one has to check half of the domain to get a 50% chance of finding the right input). Gilles Brassard, is a faculty member of the Université de Montréal, where he has been a Full Professor since 1988 and Canada Research Chair since 2001.
