Ulysses Davis
Ulysses Davis (November 5, 1872 – October 1, 1924), was an American film director. He directed 86 films between 1911 in film, 1911 and 1916 in film, 1916, some at Champion Film Company. He is probably best remembered today for having directed The Kiss (1914 film), ''The Kiss'', a 1914 film starring Ella Margaret Gibson, Margaret Gibson and William Desmond Taylor. He was born in South Amboy, New Jersey, United States. He died in Chicago and is buried at Waldheim Jewish Cemetery in Forest Park, Illinois. Champion Film Company
The Champion Film Company was an independent production company founded in 1909 by Mark M. Dintenfass. The studio was one of the film companies that merged to form Universal Pictures. Champion was the first film production company to establish itself in the area around Fort Lee, New Jersey, when the town was the home of America's first motion picture industry It built its studio in the vicinity of Fort Lee, at the town line with Englewood Cliffs in Coytesville, then a relatively remote area, to make them look as little like a studio as possible. ''The Kiss'' is a 1914 Vitagraph silent drama short motion picture starring Margaret Gibson, George Holt, William Desmond Taylor, and Myrtle Gonzalez. Directed by Ulysses Davis, the screenplay was based on a story by Marc Edmund Jones. Long thought to have been a lost film, a copy was found and put on YouTube. The film is the only known surviving film in which director William Desmond Taylor appears as an actor. Ella Margaret Gibson
Ella Margaret Gibson (September 14, 1894 – October 21, 1964) was an American stage and silent-film actress who had leading roles in Vitagraph Westerns, often opposite William Clifford. She also appeared with Charles Ray in ''The Coward'' (1915) and later worked in two Westerns with William S. Hart: ''The Money Corral'' and ''Sand!''. On her deathbed in 1964, she reportedly made a dying confession to the 1922 murder of director William Desmond Taylor. Forest Park (formerly Harlem) is a village in Cook County, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, United States. The population was 14,339 at the 2020 census. George Washington Bonner (1878 – March 12, 1935), popularly known as Kid Canfield, was an American gambler and confidence trickster who later reformed and made a series of lectures and two films on the prevalence of cheating in gambling. Born in a small village near Columbus, Ohio, Canfield learned to gamble in his family's hotel. After a period running fixed three-card Monte games at circuses, he traveled the United States to play high-stakes card games. Canfield claimed to have played with gangsters such as Arnold Rothstein, Legs Diamond, and Al Capone and to have won $350,000 from Rothstein in a single session. By 1910 Canfield had ended his gambling career and was touring the vaudeville circuit with a show recounting his story and revealing his methods of cheating. The Iron Hand
''The Iron Hand'' is a 1916 drama film directed by Ulysses Davis. It is not known whether the film currently survives. Plot Politician Tim Noland, and his companion Slim are both arrested. When they are both arrested, Noland decides to stop being a criminal, while Slim does not. Slim dies, and Tim adopts his son, Roy. Noland allows a doctor to raise Roy after he promises that raising him in a crime-free environment will allow him to grow up to be a law-abiding adult. Twenty years later, Roy falls in love with and becomes engaged to Enid Winslow, a social reformer who is the daughter of Mr. Winslow, a politician running against Tim in an election. Mr. Winslow wins the election, but he refuses to let Enid marry Roy. Mr. Winslow eventually allows the wedding to proceed after Tim offers to pay for his campaign debts.
