Ulrichsberg (album)
''Ulrichsberg'' is a live album by pianist Irène Schweizer and drummer Pierre Favre. It was recorded in May 2003 at Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon in Austria, and was released by Intakt Records in 2004. Schweizer and Favre first met at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1966, and have been playing together in a variety of contexts since then. Reception In a review for The Guardian, John Fordham wrote: "A hard-hitting pianist who also brings delicacy and shape to unstructured music, Schweizer ripples seamlessly throughout. She lets Favre fill shrewdly scattered open spaces, powers into jazzy pulses, disappears into quiet meditations, broods in booming chords, and delivers as dazzling a display as any in her field... Irène Schweizer
Irène Schweizer (born 2 June 1941) is a Swiss jazz and free improvising pianist. She was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. She has performed and recorded numerous solo piano performances as well as performing as part of the Feminist Improvising Group, whose members include Lindsay Cooper, Maggie Nichols, Georgie Born and Sally Potter. She has also performed a series of duets with drummers Pierre Favre, Louis Moholo, Andrew Cyrille, Günter Sommer, Han Bennink, Hamid Drake, as well as in trio and quartet sessions with others, including John Tchicai, Evan Parker and Peter Kowald. With Yusef Lateef, Uli Trepte and Mani Neumeier, she performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967. One of her most enduring collaborations is with the improvising musician . Pierre Favre (musician)
Pierre Favre (born 2 June 1937) is a Swiss jazz drummer and percussionist born in Le Locle, Switzerland. 1964 Pierre Favre joins Paiste: At the 1964 Paiste drummer meeting in Frankfurt, Pierre met the Paiste brothers who invited him to visit their factory in Nottwil. Since Pierre has always been interested in cymbals, he was most enthusiastic about accepting their invitation. The Paiste brothers were so impressed with his keen interest and attentive attitude, they offered him a position on their staff to take care of the most important task: cymbal development, quality control and to establish an education/drummer service dept. Pierre left Paiste as a full time employee in 1970 and was replaced by Fredy Studer. He recorded the album ''Singing Drums'' (ECM Records, ECM, 1984) with Paul Motian and Nana Vasconcelos. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. The Montreux Jazz Festival (formerly Festival de Jazz Montreux and Festival International de Jazz Montreux) is a music festival in Switzerland, held annually in early July in Montreux on the Lake Geneva shoreline. It is the second-largest annual jazz festival in the world after Canada's Montreal International Jazz Festival. Tom Hull is an American music critic, web designer, and former software developer. Hull began writing criticism for '' The Village Voice'' in the mid 1970s under the mentorship of its music editor Robert Christgau, but left the field to pursue a career in software design and engineering during the 1980s and 1990s, which earned him the majority of his life's income. inTAKT is a German ecumenical association (''Verein'') for the promotion of new Christian songs for church services (Neues Geistliches Lied, NGL), and of art, culture and musical education. Its members are mostly hymnwriters and composers interested in NGL. Foundation and program Patrick Dehm and Eugen Eckert founded the association, together with other authors and composers of NGL, on 8 April 2013. Dehm became president, Eckert vice president, Annette Kreuzer and Thomas Gabriel were on the board, among others. The association is ecumenical and open to all lyricists and composers of NGL. The name refers to the earlier group TAKT, short for ''TextAutor/innen- und Komponist/innen-Tagung'' (Convention of text authors and composers), which was founded in 1947 and took the name in 1997.
