Uithuizen
Uithuizen () is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Het Hogeland. It had a population of 4,885 in January 2017. The Uithuizen railway station is located on the Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway. History Uithuizen was first mentioned in 1000 as Uthuson (extreme houses). It was established by the inhabitants of as their furthest edge. Around 1200, a dike was built to protect the village. In the mid-19th century, Uithuizen started to grow substantially. In the village is a ''borg'' called the Menkemaborg. Menkemaborg at Uithuizen is a 14th-century, brick-built country house, which was substantially altered around 1700. Since then it has since barely been changed. The Alberda family, the 18th-century occupants, commissioned artists to decorate the interior with impressive chimney-pieces carved with baroque ornaments, and paintings of mythological scenes. Uithuizen Gas Plant
The Uithuizen Gas Plant is a main natural gas terminal in the Netherlands. History The plant has been running since 1975. The gas field was discovered in 1970. Neptune Energy now run the site. Neptune Energy have run two natural gas pipelines in the UK. Neptune Energy has also ran the pipeline to the Balgzand Gas Plant, since 2008, which has Dutch, British, Danish and German natural gas. Structure The site is close to the most-northern part of the Netherlands, in the north-east of the country. Operation Natural gas reaches the processing plant via 470km of pipelines, from 75 separate platforms. From the site, the gas is distributed around the Netherlands by Gasunie (Gas Transport Services B.V.). Condensate is transferred along an 8km pipeline to Roodeschool railway station. Menkemaborg
The Menkemaborg (; Menkema Borough) is a ''borg'' (castle) in the village of Uithuizen in Groningen in the Netherlands. Since 1927, the ''borg'' is a historic house museum. Mansion Menkemaborg is an originally 14th-century, brick-built house, which was dramatically altered around 1700 but has since been barely changed. The Alberda family, the 18th-century occupants, commissioned artists to decorate the interior with impressive chimney-pieces carved with baroque ornaments, and paintings of mythological scenes. A four-poster bed, draped with yellow silk damask from China, has also been preserved. The rooms, which comprise reception rooms, the gentlemen's room, a study, dining room, bedroom, kitchen and cellars, are fully furnished with furniture, silverware, china, brassware and portrait paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. 2013 Energiewacht Tour
The 2013 Energiewacht Tour is the third edition of the Energiewacht Tour women's cycling stage race. It is rated by the UCI as category 2.2, and is held between 3 and 7 April 2013 in the Netherlands. Sauwerd–Roodeschool Railway
The Sauwerd–Roodeschool railway is a railway line in the Netherlands running from Sauwerd to Roodeschool, passing through Winsum, Warffum and Uithuizen. The line was opened in 1893. Although the railway originally started in Sauwerd, train services have always started and terminated in Groningen. At 28 March 2018, an extra branch from Roodeschool to Eemshaven was opened. Frits Peutz
F.P.J. Peutz (7 April 1896 – 24 October 1974) was a Dutch (Limburgian) architecture, architect. Biography Peutz was born in a Catholic family in Uithuizen in Groningen (province), Groningen, a mostly Protestant province in the north of the Netherlands. In 1910 he was sent to the Rolduc boarding school in Kerkrade in the Catholic province of Limburg for his higher education. In 1914 he graduated at the HBS, an old type of Dutch high school. After that he studied civil engineering in Delft. In 1916 he changed to architecture. In 1920, while still not graduated, he returned to Limburg to settle as an independent architect in the town of Heerlen, where the booming coal mining industry provided him with many assignments. Peutz played a major role in transforming Heerlen in a true, modern city. In 1925 he received his degree in architecture. Frederick Engel (Fre) Jeltsema (Uithuizen, 4 October 1879 - The Hague, 16 February 1971) was a Dutch painter and sculptor. Because of a medical uncertainty at birth, Jeltsema was registered as a girl in the municipality's population registry. This was administratively corrected in 1906. In 1892–1896 Jeltsema followed a course at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. Seth Gaaikema
Seth Gaaikema (11 July 1939 – 21 October 2014) was a Dutch cabaret artist, writer, and lyricist. Gaaikema was born in Uithuizen, Netherlands, as the son of a Mennonite minister. After studying Dutch and founding the student cabaret at the University of Groningen, he became a lyricist writing for established artists such as Wim Kan. He had met Kan while he was at university, and Kan soon became his idol and later his competitor. Gaaikema and Kan collaborated for a long time in what Kan later called a love-hate relationship; he criticized Gaaikema as a clone, as did other critics. Gaaikema was a solo artist since 1967, though his cabaret shows were often considered slow or too serious by critics; not until 1994 did he have a show praised by all critics. Borg (castle)
A borg (; Gronings: ''börg'') is a former stronghold or villa in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. Borgs used to belong to noblemen or prominent citizens. A comparable building in the neighboring province of Friesland is called a stins. History A borg usually started as a brick building, a 'steenhuis' (literally meaning 'stone house'), built in the 13th or 14th century. A steenhuis was usually 11 meters long and eight meters wide. The walls were thick, often more than one meter in thickness. Most were originally made of wood because stone was expensive, but less flammable. A steenhuis was not used as a house, but offered protection in times of danger. There is one original steenhuis left in Groningen, the Iwema-steenhuis in Niebert.
