Uhura's Song
''Uhura's Song'' is a ''Star Trek: The Original Series'' novel written by Janet Kagan published in 1985. Kagan was asked to produce an outline by editor David G. Hartwell, after he read the manuscript of her novel '' Hellspark''. She was unfamiliar with '' Star Trek'' and needed to research the series whilst writing ''Uhura's Song''. She subsequently proposed two sequels, but they went unwritten as they featured original characters introduced in ''Uhura's Song''. Plot Lt. Uhura's friendship with a cat-like diplomat from Eeiauo becomes vital when a plague threatens the population. The songs they shared are key to the cure. When the plague begins to infect humans starting with Dr. McCoy, the crew of the ''Enterprise'' must work to decipher the songs and cure the plague. Janet Kagan
Janet Kagan (born Janet Megson, April 18, 1946 – February 29, 2008) was an American author. Her works include two science fiction novels and two science fiction collections, plus numerous science fiction and fantasy short stories that appeared in publications such as ''Analog Science Fiction and Fact'' and ''Asimov's Science Fiction''. Her story " The Nutcracker Coup" was nominated for both the Hugo Award for Best Novelette and the Nebula Award for Best Novelette, winning the Hugo. A Mary Sue is a character archetype in fiction, usually a young woman, who is often portrayed as inexplicably competent across all domains, gifted with unique talents or powers, liked or respected by most other characters, unrealistically free of weaknesses, extremely attractive, innately virtuous, and/or generally lacking meaningful character flaws. Usually female and almost always the main character, a Mary Sue is often an author's idealized self-insertion, and may serve as a form of wish-fulfillment. ''The Tears of the Singers'' is a science fiction novel by American writer Melinda M. Snodgrass, part of the '' Star Trek: The Original Series'' franchise. It was her first and only ''Star Trek'' novel, which led to Snodgrass writing for '' Star Trek: The Next Generation''. Writer Victor Milán was also involved in the initial discussion of the plot for the novel. Plot Captain Kirk and the USS ''Enterprise'' joins with the Klingons to investigate a spatial anomaly that has already swallowed one starship.
