Ugo Piatti
Ugo Piatti (Milan, 1888–1953) was an Italian painter and instrument maker, best known for collaborating on the construction of the ''intonarumori'' with Luigi Russolo. Piatti enrolled at the Brera Academy in 1903 and came into contact with the group of Milanese Futurist artists in the early years of the next decade, collaborated with Luigi Russolo on creating Intonarumori (noise-making machines) and making his debut at the Famiglia Artistica in 1911. Piatti accompanied Filippo Tommaso Marinetti on his trips to London, Paris and Prague after World War I. His involvement with the Novecento Italiano art movement through Margherita Sarfatti in the 1920s saw his paintings taking on simpler handling of volume and a focus on landscape, views of Milano and still-life depictions of flowers. Intonarumori
Intonarumori are experimental musical instruments invented and built by the Italian futurist Luigi Russolo between roughly 1910 and 1930. There were 27 varieties of intonarumori built in total, with different names. Background Russolo built these instruments to perform the music outlined in his ''The Art of Noises'' manifesto written in 1913 and published in book form in 1916. The instruments were completely acoustic, not electronic. The boxes had various types of internal construction to create different types of noise music. Often a wheel was touching a string attached to a drum. The wheel rattled or bowed the strings, while the drum functioned as an acoustic resonator. Many of the instruments featured a handle on top of the box, which was used to vary the string tension. Pulling the handle raised the tone, and the horn attached to the box amplified the sound. Margherita Sarfatti
Margherita Sarfatti (née Grassini; 8 April 1880 – 30 October 1961) was an Italian journalist, art critic, patron, collector, socialite, and prominent propaganda adviser of the National Fascist Party. She was Benito Mussolini's biographer as well as one of his mistresses. Biography Sarfatti was born in Venice, the daughter of Amedeo Grassini and Emma Levi (whose cousin Giuseppe Levi was the father of Natalia Ginzburg). Amedeo was a wealthy Jewish lawyer and businessman. He was a fiscal attorney for the Venetian government and a close friend of Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, later Pope Pius X. He would later be made a Knight of the Order of the Crown of Italy. Sarfatti grew up in a ''palazzo'' situated at the Canal Grande in Venice and was educated by private tutors. However, she was soon attracted by socialist ideas and escaped her parents' home at age 18 to marry Cesare Sarfatti, a Jewish lawyer from Padua. Novecento Italiano () was an Italian artistic movement founded in Milan in 1922 to create an art based on the rhetoric of the fascism of Benito Mussolini, Mussolini. History Novecento Italiano was founded by Anselmo Bucci (1887–1955), Leonardo Dudreville (1885–1975), Achille Funi, Gian Emilio Malerba (1880–1926), Piero Marussig, Pietro Marussig, Ubaldo Oppi, and Mario Sironi. Motivated by a post-war "Return to order, call to order", they were brought together by Lino Pesaro, a gallery owner interested in modern art, and Margherita Sarfatti, a writer and art critic who worked on Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, Benito Mussolini's newspaper, ''Il Popolo d'Italia, The People of Italy'' (''Il Popolo d'Italia'').
