Ubenide Constituency
Ubenide is a constituency of Nauru made up of four districts: Baitsi, Denigomodu, Nibok, and Uaboe. It covers an area of 4.5 km² (1.73 mi²), making it the second largest constituency by area, and is the most populous constituency with a population of 3,300. It returns four members to the Parliament of Nauru in Yaren, being the only district to return four. Geography "Ubenide" is an acronym, named after the 4 districts that comprise the constituency - Uaboe, Beidi (the old name of Baitsi), Nibok, and Denigomodu. Ubenide is located along the northeast coast of Nauru, and shares borders with the constituencies of Anetan, Anabar, Buada and Aiwo. The phosphate railway crosses through the constituency in the hills. Rail Transport In Nauru
Rail transport in Nauru is used for moving calcium pyrophosphate from the island's interior to the cantilever jetties on the island's western coast. For this purpose, a 3,900 m long, 0.6096 m narrow gauge railway was built by the Pacific Phosphate Company in 1907. The line passes through the districts of Aiwo, Buada, Denigomodu, Nibok, Uaboe and Anibare. History The railway at Aiwo jetty was electrified in 1912, but replaced by a conveyor belt between the storage bins and the jetty head. The gauge was upgraded to 0.9144 m narrow gauge railway by the British Phosphate Commission in 1920. In the past, steam engines were used to power the trains, but the railway is nowadays worked by diesel engines, though occasionally, a tractor is used. With Nauru's phosphate deposits almost depleted, the future of the railway is uncertain. The trains were still running as of 2008. Fabian Dominic Ribauw (born January 18, 1971) is a political figure from the Pacific nation of Nauru. Background and political role Ribauw was born in Baitsi. He studied in Australia and earned a BA in Economics from La Trobe University, Melbourne. Ribauw served a period as a Member of the Parliament of Nauru. Aloysius Arabao Iyomogo Edrick Amwano (also called ''Ali Amwano''; born 21 June 1955) is a Nauruan politician. Buraro Robidok Bagewa Detudamo (1931 – 5 June 1994) was a Nauruan politician. He was the only son of Timothy Detudamo and brother-in-law to Kennan Adeang. When Buraro was a boy, his family went to Chuuk Islands. Detudamo served as a member of the Nauru Local Government Council, the Nauru Legislative Council, and the Parliament of Nauru. Kennan Ranibok Adeang (23 December 1942 – 26 December 2011) was a Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru for three separate periods during the late 20th century. Born in Nauru, and educated in Australia, including at the Australian School of Pacific Administration, Adeang was first elected to the Parliament of Nauru in 1971, representing the seat of Ubenide, and became a noted opponent of Hammer DeRoburt, the country's first president. He first became president in 1986, serving two short terms at the end of that year. In the following year, 1987, Adeang was involved in the establishment of the Democratic Party of Nauru, one of the first political parties in Nauru.
