US–China Peoples Friendship Association
The US–China Peoples Friendship Association (USCPFA) is a nonprofit educational organization whose stated aim is to develop and strengthen people-to-people diplomacy between the United States and the People's Republic of China. According to its website, the group "organizes and conducts educational tours to China, often in conjunction with its continuing exchange with the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC)." History USCPFA was founded as a national organization in 1974. Its founding convention was held at the University of California in Los Angeles, with speakers including authors David Crook and Han Suyin. The first National Chairman was William Hinton, author of '' Fanshen''. During Hinton's tenure, the USCPFA arranged about 24 tours each year to China. Dixie Mission
The United States Army Observation Group (), commonly known as the Dixie Mission (), was the first US effort to gather intelligence and establish relations with the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army, then headquartered in the mountainous city of Yan'an, Shaanxi. The mission was launched on 22 July 1944, during World War II, and lasted until 11 March 1947. The goals of the mission were to investigate the Communists politically and militarily and to determine if the US would benefit from establishing liaison. Communist local governments had cooperated in rescuing American pilots downed in North China after bombing Japan, and the invasion of Japan might still have been launched from China, which would have involved landing American troops in China. Sino-American Friendship Association
The Sino-American Friendship Association (SAFA) is a nonprofit organization based in New York City whose stated aim is to develop cross-cultural collaboration between the United States and China. SAFA assists schools in running Chinese cultural clubs and hosting "Chinese culture weeks." SAFA also promotes traditional Chinese medicine, participates in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Times Square Ball Drop, and has organized trips to mainland China for members to meet with officials of the United Front Work Department. SAFA has organized trips for American mayors to China with the support of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. Mark Selden (born 1938) is a coordinator of the open-access journal ''The Asia-Pacific Journal: Japan Focus'', a senior research associate in the East Asia Program at Cornell University, and Bartle Professor of History and Sociology at Binghamton University. He graduated from Amherst College with a major in American Studies and completed a Ph.D. at Yale University in modern Chinese history. Yan'an; ; alternatively spelled as Yenan is a prefecture-level city in the Shaanbei region of Shaanxi province, China, bordering Shanxi to the east and Gansu to the west. Koji Ariyoshi
(1914–1976) was an American labor activist and a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Second World War. Early life Ariyoshi was born in Hawaii in 1914 to Japanese immigrant parents. Ariyoshi grew up helping his family make a living on a small eight-acre coffee plantation. He attended Konawaena High School before he worked for six years to help pay off the family debt. Around then, Ariyoshi became interested in labor politics. He attended the University of Hawaiʻi, but became alienated by his perception of institutional bias against labor unions and liberal thought. He transferred to the University of Georgia on scholarship. In Georgia, where he was befriended by the parents of the novelist Erskine Caldwell, Ariyoshi became determined to ease the plight of the sharecroppers he met and to improve labor conditions for the working class.
