Motocross is a form of off-road motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits. The sport evolved from motorcycle trials competitions held in the United Kingdom. History Motocross first evolved in Britain from motorcycle trials competitions, such as the Auto-Cycle Clubs's first quarterly trial in 1909 and the Scottish Six Days Trial that began in 1912. When organisers dispensed with delicate balancing and strict scoring of trials in favour of a race to become the fastest rider to the finish, the activity became known as "hare scrambles", said to have originated in the phrase, "a rare old scramble" describing one such early race. Though known as scrambles racing (or just scrambles) in the United Kingdom, the sport grew in popularity and the competitions became known internationally as "motocross racing", by combining the French word for motorcycle, ''motocyclette'', or ''moto'' for short, into a portmanteau with "cross country". Grand National Cross Country
The Grand National Cross Country Series is an American motorcycle racing series. The off-road race series was founded by Dave Coombs in 1975 and is sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). The competition is similar to motocross but, instead of using an enclosed race track, it features extended cross-country, off-road courses of 8 to 12 miles in length and competitions lasting up to 3 hours. GNCC races are physically demanding, leading as many as 2,200 riders through tracks ranging from woods, to hills, mud, rocks, roots, motocross track sections and more. The series has classes for off-road motorcycles, ATV and eMTB vehicles. GNCC Racing is open to both professional and amateur racers in a variety of skill level and age classes. Ironman Raceway
Ironman Raceway is a motocross track in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Originating as a Grand National Cross Country venue beginning in 1995, the motocross course opened in 2014 due in part to the large success of the Ironman GNCC. The facility hosts events within the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship the GNCC Racing Series, as well as a round of the ATV Motocross National Championship. Ironman History During a trip to the Blackwater 100 GNCC event in the early 1990s, the Shaver Family came in contact with race promoter, Dave Coombs. After some discussion with Big Dave, they felt their family farm may be suitable for a GNCC event. Dave would send his Son-in-Law, Jeff Russell, to Crawfordsville, Indiana to see the farm firsthand. After a brief tour, the decision was made to add the event to the GNCC schedule beginning in 1995. Glen Helen Regional Park is a county park located in San Bernardino, California, United States adjacent to the Cajon Pass. It was the site of both US Festivals of the early 1980s.
