Union Sportive Thionville Lusitanos is a football club based in Thionville, France. As of the 2023–24 season, it competes in the Championnat National 3, the fifth tier of the French football league system. History The football club was born in 1905 as ''Fußball-Club Diedenhofen''. After the first world war it was renamed ''La Sportive Thionvilloise'' following the transfer of Thionville from Germany to France in accord with the Treaty of Versaille. During the second world war, between 1940 and 1945, with the Germans in charge of the area again, the club was renamed ''Tum-und-Sportgemeinschaft'' before reverting to it's previous name. In 1943, Fritz Walter played in the squad, who went on to win the World Cup in 1954 with West Germany. In 1961 the club gained promotion to the national amateur division for the first time. The Championnat National 3, commonly referred to as simply National 3 and formerly known as Championnat de France Amateur 2, is a football league competition. The league serves as the fifth division of the French football league system behind Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Championnat National, and the Championnat National 2. Usually contested by 168 clubs, the Championnat National 3 operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Championnat National 2 and the regional leagues of the Division d'Honneur, the sixth division of French football. Seasons run from August to May, with teams in twelve groups playing 26 games each totalling 2080 games in the season.
