US Open Polo Championship
The US Open Polo Championship is an annual polo championship in the United States. It is organized since 1904 by the United States Polo Association (USPA). History The tournament was first played on September 20, 1904 at Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx in New York City. At the first game the Wanderers defeated the Meadowbrook Freebooters. After the inaugural U.S. Open in 1904, the tournament was not played again until 1910, when it grew to include six teams. It resumed at Narragansett Pier, Rhode Island, where it was played for several years before relocating to what became its longtime home, Meadowbrook Polo Club in Old Westbury, New York. In 1954, the U.S. Open moved to Oak Brook, Illinois, where it remained for 22 years, followed by an eight-year stint at Retama in San Antonio, Texas. Narragansett Pier is an unincorporated village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Narragansett in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 3,409 at the 2010 census. Geography Narragansett Pier is located at (41.429928, -71.466410). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.2 km2 (3.9 mi2). 9.4 km2 (3.6 mi2) of it is land and 0.8 km2 (0.3 mi2) of it (8.12%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 3,671 people, 1,745 households, and 886 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 391.5/km2 (1,013.5/mi2). Captain Frederick Agnew Gill (25 May 1873 in Castletown, Isle of Man – 4 June 1938 in Emery Down) was a British Army officer and a polo player in the 1900 Summer Olympics. He was polo manager at the Ranelagh Club in London. Biography He was born in 1873 and educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Francis Octavius Grenfell, VC (4 September 1880 – 24 May 1915) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross. Early life and family He was born on 4 September 1880 to Sophia and Pascoe Du Pré Grenfell. He was one of fifteen children. He had a twin brother, Riversdale Grenfell, also in the 9th Lancers, who was killed in action in September 1914. Joshua Crane (October 24, 1869 – December 7, 1964) was an American athlete who participated in a number of sports, including court tennis, golf, and polo. He was a four time United States court tennis champion and was on the team that made the finals of the 1904 U.S. Open Polo Championship. Early life Crane was born to Joshua and Anne Eliza (Jose) Crane on October 24, 1869, in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was the fourth member of his family to have the name Joshua Crane. His grandfather was an iron merchant and his father worked for Enoch and George Francis Train, the United States Department of the Treasury, and the Michigan Central and Eastern Railroads. Early life Larry, as he was referred to by friends, was born on March 31, 1877 in New York City. He was one of seven children born to Catherine Anthony "Kate" (née Furman) Waterbury and James Montaudevert Waterbury, Sr. (1851–1931).
