USS Pipestone
USS ''Pipestone'' (AK-203) was an that was constructed for the US Navy during the closing period of World War II. By the time she was scheduled for commissioning, the war’s end caused her to be declared “excess to needs” and she was returned to the US Government and struck by the Navy. Construction ''Pipestone'' was laid down under US Maritime Commission (MARCOM) contract, MC hull 2157, by Globe Shipbuilding Co., Superior, Wisconsin. She was transferred to the Navy in April 1945. ''Pipestone'' was scheduled for commissioning. However, because of the Allied victory in the Pacific Ocean theatre of operations, her commissioning was delayed. Merchant service ''Pipestone'' was ordered returned to MARCOM for disposal. Her name subsequently reverted to ''Coastal Explorer''. ''Coastal Explorer'' was used by a couple of shipping companies from 1945–1946, before being sold to the government of the Republic of Peru for $693,862. Pipestone County, Minnesota
Pipestone County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,424. Its county seat is Pipestone. History The county was formed on May 23, 1857, by act of the territorial legislature, but was not organized at that time. The area was first designated ''Rock County'' while the name ''Pipestone County'' was attached to neighboring Rock County. An act of the Minnesota state legislature on February 20, 1862, swapped the designations, attaching the present names to the present counties, due to the pipestone quarry in this county. Pipestone County organization was effected by a state act on January 27, 1879, with Pipestone City (which had been platted in 1876) as the county seat (the name of the county seat was later shortened to Pipestone). In artillery, caliber or calibredifference in British English and American English spelling is the internal diameter of a gun barrel, or - by extension - a relative measure of the barrel length.
