USS ''Firedrake'' (AE-14) was a ''Mount Hood''-class ammunition ship in service with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1971. She was scrapped in 1978. History ''Firedrake'' was laid down on 13 March 1944 by North Carolina Shipbuilding Company, Wilmington, North Carolina as ''Winged Racer''; launched 12 May 1944, sponsored by Mrs. R.M. Kitchins; acquired by the Navy 29 June 1944; converted to an ammunition ship at Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Florida; and commissioned at Jacksonville on 27 December 1944. World War II After shakedown and yard availability at Naval Base Norfolk in January 1945, ''Firedrake'' loaded ammunition and general cargo at Naval Weapons Station Earle, New Jersey (USA) from which she sailed 16 February 1945 for the Caroline Islands. United States Fifth Fleet
The Fifth Fleet is a numbered fleet of the United States Navy. It has been responsible for naval forces in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and parts of the Indian Ocean since 1995 after a 48-year hiatus. It shares a commander and headquarters with U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (''NAVCENT'') in Bahrain. Fifth Fleet/NAVCENT is a component command of, and reports to, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Yellow Sea
The Yellow Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean located between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, and can be considered the northwestern part of the East China Sea. It is one of four seas named after common colour terms (the others being the Black Sea, the Red Sea and the White Sea), and its name is descriptive of the golden-yellow colour of the silt-laden water discharged from major rivers. The Sea of Japan is the marginal sea between the Japanese archipelago, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the mainland of the Russian Far East. The Japanese archipelago separates the sea from the Pacific Ocean. Like the Mediterranean Sea, it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean.
