USS Corporal
USS ''Corporal'' (SS-346), a submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the corporal, an alternate name for the fallfish, found in streams of the eastern United States. Construction and commissioning ''Corporal'' was Ship naming and launching, launched 10 June 1945 by Electric Boat Co., Groton, Connecticut, sponsored by Mrs. H. C. Wick; ship commissioning, commissioned 9 November 1945, Commander Edward E. Shelby in command; and reported to the US Atlantic Fleet, Atlantic Fleet. Service history ''Corporal'' cleared Naval Submarine Base New London, New London 8 January 1946 for her base at Key West, arriving 25 February. She took part in antisubmarine warfare projects and fleet exercises off Florida and Bermuda and in the Caribbean Sea, Caribbean until returning to Groton 26 February 1947. Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program
The Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program (GUPPY) was initiated by the United States Navy after World War II to improve the submerged speed, maneuverability, and endurance of its submarines. (The "Y" in the acronym was added for pronounceability.) The navy began the program by testing and reverse engineering two German Type XXI U-boats— and —obtained as war reparation. That analysis led to four goals—increasing the submarines' battery capacity, streamlining the boats' structures, adding Submarine snorkel, snorkels, and improving Fire-control system, fire control systems. The navy immediately focused on designing a new class of submarine, but the Bureau of Ships believed the fleet of existing , , and submarines could be modified to incorporate the desired improvements.
