USS Antares (AK-258)
The second USS ''Antares'' (AK-258) was a United States Navy in commission from 1952 to 1959. She was converted into a general stores issue ship (AKS-33) in 1959-1960 and remained in commission as such until 1964. She saw extensive service during the Cold War. Prior to her U.S. Navy career, she had operated as the merchant ship SS ''Nampa Victory'' during the latter stages of World War II and in the years immediately after the war. Construction SS ''Nampa Victory'' was a Maritime Commission type VC2-S-AP3 hull laid down on 6 April 1944 at Portland, Oregon, by the Oregon Shipbuilding Corporation under a Maritime Commission contract as MCV hull 107. A cargo ship or freighter is a merchant ship that carries cargo, goods, and materials from one port to another. The War Shipping Administration (WSA) was a World War II emergency war agency of the US government, tasked to purchase and operate the civilian shipping tonnage the United States needed for fighting the war.
