USAction
USAction was a 501(c)(4) federation of progressive community organizing groups. It was founded in 1999 by Heather Booth. Its 501(c)(3) counterpart was the USAction Education Fund. In September 2007, TrueMajority and its related organization TrueMajorityACTION merged with USAction. Activities In 2008, USAction joined Health Care for America Now, a coalition of labor unions and liberal advocacy groups pushing for affordable health care and stricter regulation of the health insurance industry. Heather Booth
Heather Booth (born December 15, 1945) is an American civil rights activist, feminist, and political strategist who has been involved in activism for progressive causes. During her student years, she was active in both the civil rights movement and feminist causes. Since then she has had a career involving feminism, community organization, and progressive politics. Early life and family Booth was born in a military hospital in Brookhaven, Mississippi, on December 15, 1945, during a period in which her father was serving as an Army doctor. Soon after her birth, her family moved to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, where she received her elementary education in P.S. 200 in the Bath Beach neighborhood. TrueMajority was a progressive advocacy group in the United States. In September 2007, TrueMajority and its related organization TrueMajorityACTION merged with USAction. By 2008, the combined groups had over 700,000 members, making it, together with MoveOn, one of the two largest liberal advocacy groups in the United States. TrueMajority was founded by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's. TrueMajorityACTION was a separate but closely related organization, which had a different status under U.S. law so that it could campaign for specific parties and politicians. Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is a political advocacy group of more than 1,000 organizations that joined together in 2008 in a successful effort to promote legislation to reform the United States health care system and extend medical benefits to most of the population that is currently uninsured. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA or ACA) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010, and HCAN was credited with being a "major contributor" to its passage.
