UNITY Journalists
UNITY: Journalists for Diversity was an alliance of the Asian American Journalists Association, the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, the Native American Journalists Association. UNITY served as the umbrella organization under which the groups hold a joint convention. UNITY conventions were held in 1994 (Atlanta), 1999 (Seattle), 2004 (Washington, D.C.), 2008 (Chicago) and 2012 (Las Vegas). The first president of Unity was San Francisco Bay Area television journalist Lloyd LaCuesta. David Steinberg of the ''San Francisco Chronicle'', a former president of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, is president. Asian American Journalists Association
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational and professional organization based in San Francisco, California with more than 1,500 members and 21 chapters across the United States and Asia. The current president is Washington Post reporter Michelle Ye Hee Lee. The executive director is Naomi Tacuyan Underwood. National Lesbian And Gay Journalists Association
NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists, is an American professional association dedicated to unbiased coverage of LGBTQ issues in the media. It is based in Washington, D.C., and the membership consists primarily of journalists, students, educators, and communications professionals. The organization was previously known as the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), but changed its name in 2013 to "NLGJA: The Association of LGBT Journalists" to reflect the diversity of the communities it represents. In 2016, it added a "Q", updating its name to "NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists." Native American Journalists Association
The Native American Journalists Association, based in Norman, Oklahoma, on the campus of the University of Oklahoma, is an organization dedicated to supporting Native Americans in journalism. The organization hosts the annual National Native Media Awards. Mission and structure The organization seeks to improve the representation of Native Americans in newsrooms and in the profession of journalism, NAJA is a member group of UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. Each year, the organization recognizes Native American journalists and associate members with journalism awards for excellence in coverage on a variety of topic areas. The San Francisco Bay Area, often referred to as simply the Bay Area, is a populous region surrounding the San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bay estuaries in Northern California. Lloyd LaCuesta
Lloyd LaCuesta (born in Honolulu, Hawaii) is an American journalist. He was most recently the South Bay bureau chief for the San Francisco Bay Area TV station KTVU's news division, having worked at KTVU for 35 years. He retired from the position as of June 2012. LaCuesta is of Filipino ancestry. Career LaCuesta served in the Army as a broadcast journalist for the American Forces Korea Network. He attended California State University, Los Angeles and San Jose State University (SJSU), earning a B.A. in journalism and political science. He won the Sigma Delta Chi Award for reporting while at SJSU. He received an M.A. in Journalism from University of California, Los Angeles. He worked as a writer for KNX/CBS Radio in Los Angeles and the ''Los Angeles Herald Examiner'', and as a producer for KABC-TV in Los Angeles and KGO-TV in San Francisco. San Francisco Chronicle
The ''San Francisco Chronicle'' is a newspaper serving primarily the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded in 1865 as ''The Daily Dramatic Chronicle'' by teenage brothers Charles de Young and M. H. de Young, Michael H. de Young. The paper is owned by the Hearst Corporation, which bought it from the de Young family in 2000. It is the only major daily paper covering the city and county of San Francisco. The paper benefited from the growth of San Francisco and had the largest newspaper circulation on the West Coast of the United States by 1880. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of African-American journalists, students, and media professionals. Founded in 1975 in Washington, D.C., by 44 journalists, the NABJ's stated purpose is to provide quality programs and services to and advocate on behalf of black journalists. The organization has worked for diversity and to increase the number of minorities in newsrooms across the country. The association's national office is on the main campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. The current president is Dorothy Tucker, Investigative reporter for WBBM-TV CBS Chicago, and the executive director is Drew Berry. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is a Washington, D.C.-based organization dedicated to the advancement of Hispanic and Latino journalists in the United States and Puerto Rico. It was established in 1984. NAHJ has approximately 2,300 members, including working journalists, journalism students, other media-related professionals and journalism educators. Asian Americans are Americans of Asian ancestry (including naturalized Americans who are immigrants from specific regions in Asia and descendants of such immigrants). Although this term had historically been used for all the indigenous peoples of the continent of Asia, the usage of the term "Asian" by the United States Census Bureau only includes people with origins or ancestry from the Far East, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent and excludes people with ethnic origins in certain parts of Asia, including West Asia who are now categorized as Middle Eastern Americans. The term ''Hispanic'' ( es, hispano) refers to people, cultures, or countries related to Spain, the Spanish language, or Hispanidad. The term commonly applies to countries with a cultural and historical link to Spain and to viceroyalties formerly part of the Spanish Empire following the Spanish colonization of the Americas, parts of the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.
