UNEP GEO Data Portal
The UNEP Environmental Data Explorer (what was the GEO Data Portal until June 2012) was an authoritative source for data sets used by the UNEP and its partners in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report and other integrated environment assessments. Its online database held more than 500 different variables, as national, sub regional, regional and global statistics or as geospatial data sets (maps), covering themes like Fresh water, Population, Forests, Emissions, Climate, Disasters, Health and GDP. One could display them on-the-fly as maps, graphs, data tables or download the data in different formats. Service was launched in 2002 January and shut down in 2016 June. Six GEO reports have been published to date: GEO-1 in 1997, GEO-2000 in 1999, GEO-3 in 2002, GEO-4 in 2007, GEO-5 in 2012, and GEO-6 in 2019. GEO process The coordinated global network of collaborating centers (CCs) is at the core of the GEO process. These centers have played an increasingly active role in preparing GEO reports. Regional centers are now responsible for almost all the regional inputs, combining top-down integrated assessment with bottom-up environmental reporting. Other institutions provide specialized expertise on cross-cutting or thematic issues. Working groups provide ...
