UMaine Deepwater Offshore Wind Test Site
The University of Maine (UMaine) Deepwater Offshore Wind Test Site, located nearly 3 miles south west of Monhegan Island, Maine is available for use by commercial and non-commercial entities in partnership with the University of Maine, or the University of Maine itself, to research and develop ocean energy devices, such as floating wind turbines or wave energy converters. The University of Maine asserts that the test site is among the most extensively studied in the Gulf of Maine. The site was established under Maine law in 2009. The legislation formally designates the test site as the "Maine Offshore Wind Energy Research Center." Maine Aqua Ventus I, GP, LLC, is pursuing a 12 MW demonstration offshore wind pilot project in the test site, with deployment and commercial operations planned for 2020. Monhegan Island
Monhegan () is an island in the Gulf of Maine located in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. A plantation, a minor civil division in the state of Maine falling between unincorporated area and a town, it is located about off the mainland. The population was 64 at the 2020 census. The plantation comprises its namesake island and the uninhabited neighboring island of Manana. The island is accessible by scheduled boat service from Boothbay Harbor, New Harbor and Port Clyde. Visitors' cars are not allowed on the island. It was designated a National Natural Landmark for its coastal and island flora in 1966. Maine State Planning Office
The Maine State Planning Office (SPO) was part of Maine's executive department responsible for providing independent analysis to the Governor and Legislature on the development of the state's economy and conservation of its natural resources, as well as planning assistance, policy development, program management, and technical assistance for Maine's communities, businesses, and residents. Created in 1968, it reported to the Governor, but was routinely called upon to assist the Legislature and other state departments and agencies. Dana L. Dow is an American politician from Maine. Dow served as a Republican State Senator from Maine's 20th District, where he represented most of Lincoln County, including his residence in Waldoboro. He graduated from the first class of Medomak Valley High School in 1969. He graduated from the University of Southern Maine. He was first elected to the Maine State Senate in 2004. He served a term (2010-12) in the Maine House of Representatives. In February 2012, Dow sought his old Senate seat following the resignation of David Trahan. He was defeated by Chris Johnson. The Maine Public Utilities Commission is a government agency that regulates water, electric, natural gas, and telecommunications in the state of Maine. The commission also oversees ferries and water taxis in Casco Bay. Searsport is an incorporated town and deep water seaport located at the confluence of the Penobscot River estuary and the Penobscot Bay immediately NW of Sears Island and Cape Jellison in Waldo County, Maine, United States. Hampden is a town on the Penobscot River estuary in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 7,709 at the 2020 census. Hampden is part of the Bangor metropolitan statistical area. VolturnUS (floating Wind Turbine)
The VolturnUS is a floating concrete structure that supports a wind turbine, designed by University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center and deployed by DeepCwind Consortium in 2013. The VolturnUS can support wind turbines in water depths of or more. The DeepCwind Consortium and its partners deployed a 1:8 scale VolturnUS in 2013.
