UIC–Halsted Station
UIC–Halsted, (formerly Halsted and U of I-Halsted) is a Chicago "L" station on the CTA's Blue Line. The station serves the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University Village neighborhood, and the Greektown neighborhood all located in the Near West Side. History The original Halsted station on the Metropolitan Main Line, the predecessor of the Congress line, opened in 1895, consisting of 4 tracks and two island platforms as trains from all of the Metropolitan "L" lines entered downtown. The original station closed in 1958 as the new replacement station was built as a part of the Congress Line in the median of the Congress Expressway which replaced the Garfield Park branch and the Metropolitan Main Line that were located along an alley in the right of way that is now on the present Eisenhower Expressway. Like the other stations on the Congress Line (and the future Dan Ryan Line and O'Hare Line on the Kennedy Expressway) the station has a single island platform. When th ... Halsted Street
Halsted Street is a major north-south street in the U.S. city of Chicago, Illinois. Location In Chicago's grid system, Halsted Street marks 800 West, west of State Street, from Grace Street (3800 N) in Lakeview south to the city limits at the Little Calumet River (13000 S) in West Pullman, a length of 168 north-south Chicago blocks. (From Grace north to Lawrence Avenue (4800 N) in Uptown, 800 W is marked by Clarendon Avenue.) Environs North Side In Lakeview Halsted passes through Wrigleyville, as intersecting with Addison Street, it is only two blocks east of Wrigley Field home of the Chicago Cubs. Halsted is then lined with restaurants, bars and gay bars and clubs as one enters Boystown, Chicago's main gay and lesbian community, running as far as Belmont Avenue. Metropolitan Main Line (CTA)
The Metropolitan main line was a rapid transit line of the Chicago "L" system from 1895 to 1958. It ran west from downtown to a junction at Marshfield station. The branch served Chicago's Near West Side, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, and Austin neighborhoods, and the suburbs of Oak ... continued westward, while the Douglas Park branch turned south, and the Logan Square branch turned north with the Humboldt Park branch (CTA), Humboldt Park branch branching from it. In addition to serving the Chicago "L", its tracks and those of the Garfield Park branch also carried the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad, an interurban that served Chicago's western suburbs, between 1905 and 1953.
