UCLA Asian American Studies Center
The University of California, Los Angeles Asian American Studies Center (AASC) is an organization that educates students and the general public about the history of Asian American and Pacific Islanders and their experiences. The AASC is one of the leading and groundbreaking organizations to have substantial and credible resources for their research. Located in Campbell Hall, the AASC quickly became a center for resource-gathering and scholarship for the Asian American movement. Asian American student organizations at CSULA, Occidental, USC, and other colleges soon followed. It was a vital hub and training ground for young activists, a place where they could earn a salary while doing community work. Dawn Mabalon
Dawn Bohulano Mabalon (August 17, 1972 – August 10, 2018) was an American academic who worked on documenting the history of Filipino Americans. Mabalon was born in Stockton, and earned her doctoral degree from Stanford University; she later taught at San Francisco State University. Mabalon was the co-founder of The Little Manila Foundation, which worked to preserve Little Manila in Stockton, California. During her life, her work elevated the topic of the history of Filipino Americans, in Central California in particular. Jeff Chang is an American historian, journalist, and music critic on hip hop music and culture. His 2005 book, '' Can't Stop Won't Stop'', which won the Before Columbus Foundation's American Book Award, chronicles the early hip hop scene. His writing has appeared in ''URB'', ''BOMB'', ''San Francisco Chronicle'', ''The Village Voice'', ''San Francisco Bay Guardian'', ''Vibe'', ''Spin'', ''The Nation'', and ''Mother Jones''. Don Nakanishi
Don Nakanishi (August 14, 1949 – March 22, 2016) was a professor and director of the Asian American Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. Nakanishi is known for establishing Asian American Studies as a "viable and relevant field of scholarship." He was the pioneer of Asian American studies in the United States and was influential in expanding the influence of Asian-American descent. ''Amerasia Journal'' is a triannual peer-reviewed academic journal established in 1971 that covers Pacific Islander and Asian American studies . The journal regularly publishes special issues addressing a particular theme. History The Amerasia journal was established by editor-in-chief Lowell Chun-Hoon, publisher Don Nakanishi, and members of the Yale University Asian American Students Association. Chun-Hoon and Nakanishi were both seniors and members of Yale's Class of 1971, and the first issue was released in March of that same year. The journal was moved to the Asian American Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, in July 1971, when Chun-Hoon became a staff member at the Center.
