The UASA is a general union in South Africa. Background The union was founded on 1 April 1998, when the Administrative, Technical and Electronic Association of South Africa merged with the Underground Officials' Association. It affiliated to the Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA). It was initially named the United Association of South Africa, and while its membership was focused in mining, it accepted workers in all industries. This allowed it to absorb the Hairdressers' and Cosmetologists' Trade Unions in 2000, followed by the South African Diamond Workers' Union, and the Staff Association for the Motor and Related Industries, both in 2001. In 2002, the union absorbed SALSTAFF, and this took its membership to 65,000, making it easily FEDUSA's largest affiliate. In April 2003, the union absorbed the National Employees' Trade Union. A general union is a trade union (called ''labor union'' in American English) which represents workers from all industries and companies, rather than just one organisation or a particular sector, as in a craft union or industrial union. The Administrative, Technical and Electronic Association of South Africa (ATEASA) was a trade union representing supervisory workers in South Africa. The union was established in 1996, when the Administrative and Technical Officials' Association merged with the South African Technical Officials' Association. The South African Electrical Workers' Association was involved in the merger negotiations, but decided against affiliating. The union affiliated with the Federation of South African Labour Unions. The Underground Officials' Association (UOA) was a trade union representing supervisors in the mining industry in South Africa. The union was founded in 1918. It accepted only white workers, and prided itself on not operating a closed shop and never holding a strike. It registered with the Government of South Africa in 1924. By 1980, it had 14,462 members, and that year, it began accepting all workers holding supervisory positions in the mines. In 1983, the union finally agreed with the government to open all mining supervisory positions to non-white workers. SALSTAFF
The Salaried Staff Association (SALSTAFF) was a trade union representing railway workers in South Africa. The union was founded in 1918, as the South African Railways and Harbours Salaried Staff Association, and long represented only white workers. In 1928, it was a leading founder of the Federal Consultative Council of South African Railways and Harbours Staff Associations, which from the 1950s was affiliated to the all-white South African Confederation of Labour. By 1980, it had 27,545 members. By the early 1990s, the union had transferred to the Federation of South African Labour Unions, its membership dropping to 16,000 in 1992. The National Employees' Trade Union (NETU) was a trade union representing workers in various industries, principally relating to engineering, in South Africa. The union was founded on 1 August 1995, when the Amalgamated Engineering Union of South Africa merged with the Engineering, Industrial and Mining Workers' Union, the Iron Moulders' Society of South Africa, and the South African Boilermakers' Society. On formation, it had 66,000 members, but this fell rapidly, many employees transferring to the rival Solidarity union. It was down to 26,000 members by 2003. The South African Guild of Actors is a representative body in South Africa that advocates for the interests of South African actors in the performing arts industry. SAGA has a labour partner UASA, through whom it is represented within the Federation of Trade Unions FEDUSA. Trade Unions In South Africa
Trade unions in South Africa has a history dating back to the 1880s. From the beginning unions could be viewed as a reflection of the racial disunity of the country, with the earliest unions being predominantly for white workers. Through the turbulent years of 1948–1991 trade unions played an important part in developing political and economic resistance, and eventually were one of the driving forces in realising the transition to an inclusive democratic government. Today trade unions are still an important force in South Africa, with 3.11 million members representing 25.3% of the formal work force.
