In road transportation in the United States, a special route is a road in a numbered highway system that diverts a specific segment of related traffic away from another road. They are featured in many highway systems; most are found in the Interstate Highway System, U.S. highway system, and several state highway systems. Each type of special route possesses generally defined characteristics and has a defined relationship with its parent route. Typically, special routes share a route number with a dominant route, often referred as the "parent" or "mainline", and are given either a descriptor which may be used either before or after the route name, such as Alternate or Business, or a letter suffix that is attached to the route number. Alabama State Route 46
State Route 46 (SR 46) is a state highway in Cleburne County in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 78 (US 78) (which also carries the unsigned SR 4) in Heflin. The eastern terminus of the route is at the Georgia state line, east of Ranburne, where the roadway continues as Georgia State Route 166. From the late 1920s to the mid-to-late-1930s, the highway was designated as US 78S, a divided U.S. highway. When that highway was decommissioned, it was redesignated as US 78 Alt. Decommissioned Highway
A decommissioned highway is a highway that has been removed from service by being shut down, or has had its authorization as a national, provincial or state highway removed, the latter also referred to as downloading. Decommissioning can include the complete or partial demolition or abandonment of an old highway structure because the old roadway has lost its utility, but such is not always the norm. Where the old highway has continuing value, it likely remains as a local road offering access to properties denied access to the new road or for use by slow vehicles such as farm equipment and horse-drawn vehicles denied use of the newer highway. Carrollton, Georgia is a city in the northwest region of Georgia, about 45 miles (72 km) west of Atlanta near the Alabama state line. Northeast Alabama
Northeast Alabama is an ambiguous term, which may include the cities of Anniston, Gadsden, and Talladega, their surrounding areas, as well as the geographical northeast extreme of the state of Alabama. The county inclusion varies, and under some generous definitions would include the Birmingham–Hoover–Talladega, AL CSA as the largest and most diverse metropolitan area in the region, followed in population by the Anniston-Oxford MSA and Gadsden MSA. An official alternate route is a special route in the United States that provides an alternate alignment for a highway. They are loop roads and found in many road systems in the United States including the U.S. Highway system and various state and county route systems. Alternate routes were created as a means of connecting a town (or towns) desired to be on a route that had been routed differently to put another important town or city on the route, or, in the case of the U.S. Highway system, as a means to eliminate divided routes. State Route 8 (SR 8) is a state highway that travels west-to-east through portions of Haralson, Carroll, Douglas, Cobb, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Clarke, Oconee, Madison, Franklin, and Hart counties, bisecting the northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway travels from its western terminus at US 78 and SR 4 at the Alabama state line west of Tallapoosa to its eastern terminus at US 29 at the South Carolina state line at the south end of Lake Hartwell. Bowdon, Georgia
Bowdon is a city in Carroll County, Georgia, Carroll County, Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the city had a population of 2,161. State Route 34 (SR 34) is a state highway that travels west-to-east through portions of Heard and Coweta counties in the west-central part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway connects the Alabama state line southwest of Franklin with the Peachtree City area, via Franklin and Newnan.
