U.S. Route 45 Alternate (Brooksville-Shannon, Mississippi)
U.S. Route 45 Alternate (US 45 Alternate, also signed as US 45A) is a alternate route of US 45 in northeastern Mississippi, running from Brooksville, through West Point, to Shannon, which lies just south of Tupelo. Excluding the route through West Point, the entire length of US 45 Alternate is a four-lane divided expressway, with interchanges at most major junctions. It is the one of only two signed special route of any U.S. Highway within the entire state of Mississippi, with the rest being signed as normal state highways. Route description US 45 Alternate begins in northern Noxubee County at an interchange with US 45 in Brooksville. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Artesia, Mississippi
Artesia is a town in Lowndes County, Mississippi. The population was 440 at the 2010 census. History Artesia was originally ''Artesia Junction'', a junction point on the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. During the railroad's construction in the 1850s, an offer was made to the towns of Columbus and Aberdeen to route the railroad through the towns, but both towns refused. Columbus reconsidered a few months later; but by that time, the railway had already chosen a route well to the west of the town. However, the railroad did extend a spur line in order to serve Columbus, and that spur line joins the main line at the site of present-day Artesia. Artesia was the site of a voter suppression incident in 1876 in which a group of heavily armed white men from Starkville came to intimidate black voters in the Republican Club. Mississippi Highway 245 (MS 245) is a state highway located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is the designation for two separate sections of the old U.S. Route 45 Alternate (US 45 Alt.) that the state continues to maintain. The Crawford section, designated in 2007, runs south to north from US 45 Alt. back to US 45 Alt. in Lowndes County.
