U.S. Poggibonsi
Unione Sportiva Poggibonsi is an Italian association football club located in Poggibonsi, Tuscany. It currently plays in Serie D. History The club was founded in 1925 as Unione Sportive Poggibonsi. It was renamed Poggibonsi Valdelsa in 2002 and played under this name, at the professional level in the Serie C2 in 2002–2003. After that season, the team was excluded from playing Serie C2 by the federation because of financial problems, and admitted to Eccellenza. To begin the 2004/2005 season, it was refounded under his original name US Poggibonsi and promptly won the league in its first attempt. Poggibonsi played in the Serie D from 2004 to 2006, when the club, which ended the 2005–06 Serie D season in third place, was promoted because league winners Fortis Spoleto and second-placed Fortis Juventus were unable to play in the Serie C2 league. Poggibonsi is a town in the province of Siena, Tuscany, central Italy. It is located on the river Elsa and is the main centre of the Valdelsa Valley. History The area around Poggibonsi was already settled in the Neolithic age, although the first traces of civilisation dates from Etruscan-Roman age, attested by a series of necropolises and by placenames such as "Talciona" or "Marturi" (from the Etruscan name of Mars). The importance of the area dates from the 10th century, thanks to its position across the Via Francigena, the main road from Rome to France. The Serie D () is the top level of semi-professional football in the country. The fourth tier of the Italian league system, the competition sits beneath the third professional league, Serie C. It is administered by the Lega Nazionale Dilettanti and is organized by the Roman ''Comitato Interregionale'' (Interregional Committee), a "league in the league" inside the LND. Eccellenza
The Eccellenza (, "excellence") is the fifth level (since 2014–15) of Italian football. It is a regional league, composed of 28 divisions divided geographically. All 20 regions are represented by at least one division except for Piedmont and Aosta Valley which share 2 divisions. Veneto, Tuscany, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna and Campania also have 2 divisions each, while the regions of Lombardy and Lazio have 3 divisions. Promotion and relegation After the regular season is completed, the first-placed team for each division is automatically promoted to Serie D. Each division also admits one other team to participate in national playoffs that take place in late May and early June.
