Twin Lakes, Lake County, Colorado
Twin Lakes is a pair of glacier-carved alpine lakes about south of historic Leadville, Colorado. They are downstream along the Arkansas River, whose headwaters are by Leadville. The lakes, however, are on a tributary, Lake Creek, which joins the Arkansas just below the lakes. After dredging, the lakes now have a surface area of , and they serve as a reservoir to store water for use in the Front Range. Both east and west lakes are recreation areas for boating and fishing. Independence Pass, originally known as Hunter Pass, is a high mountain pass in central Colorado, United States. It is at elevation on the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. The pass is midway between Aspen and Twin Lakes, on the border between Pitkin and Lake counties. State Highway 82 (SH 82) is an state highway in the U.S. state of Colorado. Its western half provides the principal transportation artery of the Roaring Fork Valley on the Colorado Western Slope, beginning at Interstate 70 (I-70) and U.S. Highway 6 (US 6) in Glenwood Springs southeast past Carbondale, Basalt and Aspen. The Twin Lakes Historic District, in Twin Lakes, Lake County, Colorado, is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It included 12 contributing buildings. Its 1974 National Register nomination asserted:Twin Lakes is perhaps one of the best remaining examples of a mountain village of the late 1800s.
