Turnhouse Golf Club
Turnhouse Golf Club is a golf club situated in the West of Edinburgh on Lennie Hill at Turnhouse, Scotland. History The course dates back to 1897 when there were only 9-holes. By 1900, the layout was expanded to 18 holes and James Braid made amendments to the original layout in 1924. This has been the home of Turnhouse Golf Club since the name changed from the Lothian Golf Club in 1909. Contemporary times The club host an annual 7-day tournament which is regarded as one of the best in the Lothians and usually attracts high calibre players from far and wide. The layout has changed in recent years to include a brand new 5th hole in addition to the reshaping of many of the original greens. Turnhouse
Turnhouse is a suburb in the west of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, near Maybury, Gogar, Cammo and West Craigs. The area is south east of Edinburgh International Airport, and Turnhouse is also the name for the former Royal Air Force base, now closed, which dates back to the First World War and was the origin of the current civilian airport. It is now used for cargo operations in tandem with the main Edinburgh Airport. James Braid (golfer)
James Braid (6 February 1870 – 27 November 1950) was a Scottish professional golfer and a member of the Great Triumvirate of the sport alongside Harry Vardon and John Henry Taylor. He won The Open Championship five times. He also was a renowned golf course architect. Braid is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Braid was born in Earlsferry, Fife, Scotland, the son of James and Mary (née Harris). He played golf from an early age, working as a clubmaker before turning professional in 1896. Initially his game was hindered by problems with his putting, but he overcame this after switching to an aluminium putter in 1900. He won The Open Championship in 1901, 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1910.
