Turkeys Away
"Turkeys Away" is the seventh episode of the first season of the American sitcom television series ''WKRP in Cincinnati''. It aired on October 30, 1978 and was co-written by story editor Bill Dial and series creator Hugh Wilson. In the episode, station manager Arthur Carlson attempts to pull off the greatest Thanksgiving promotion in radio history: dropping live turkeys from a helicopter. Based on an actual promotion for a radio station that tossed live turkeys off the back of a truck, ''Turkeys Away'' has been praised by fans and critics and is widely considered to be the most famous episode of the series (frequently replayed during the Thanksgiving season) and one of the best episodes in television history. ''WKRP in Cincinnati'' is an American sitcom television series about the misadventures of the staff of a struggling fictional radio broadcasting, radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson (director), Hugh Wilson and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 Contemporary hit radio, radio station WQXI (AM), WQXI in Atlanta, including many of the characters. Wilson once told ''The Cincinnati Enquirer'' that he selected WKRP as the call sign to stand for C-R-A-P. Gordon Jump
Alexander Gordon Jump (April 1, 1932 – September 22, 2003) was an American actor best known as the clueless, yet occasionally wise, radio station manager Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson in the TV series ''WKRP in Cincinnati'' and the incompetent Chief of Police Tinkler in the sitcom ''Soap''. Jump guest starred on a two-part episode of the 1980s sitcom ''Diff'rent Strokes'', in which he portrayed a pedophile who tries to molest main characters Arnold and his friend, Dudley. He also played the "Maytag Repairman" in commercials for Maytag brand appliances, from 1989 until his retirement from the role in July 2003. Yellville, Arkansas
Yellville is a city and county seat in Marion County, Arkansas, United States. Yellville is located in the Ozark Mountains along the banks of Crooked Creek, and neighbors the small town of Summit to the north. The population was 1,178 at the 2020 census. The town's original name is preserved in the Shawnee Town Branch, a local creek. The town also holds an annual Turkey Trot Festival. History Yellville is named after Archibald Yell, who was the first member of the United States House of Representatives from Arkansas and the second governor of Arkansas. He was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican–American War. Yellville existed well before Arkansas became a state, though originally known as "Shawneetown". WQXI (790 kHz "Radio Korea") is an AM radio station licensed to Atlanta, Georgia. The station has a power of 28,000 watts in the daytime, and 1,000 watts at night. WQXI's signal is non-directional during the daytime, and directional at night. As of 2009, the station broadcast in the IBiquity HD Radio AM hybrid digital mode during daytime hours. History WQXI first went on the air in 1948 as an all-music station, playing pop standards. Howard Hesseman (February 27, 1940 – January 29, 2022) was an American actor known for his television roles as burned-out disc jockey Dr. Johnny Fever on ''WKRP in Cincinnati'', and the lead role of history teacher Charlie Moore on ''Head of the Class''. Karin Jan Smithers (born July 3, 1949) is an American actress. She is known for playing Bailey Quarters on the CBS sitcom ''WKRP in Cincinnati'' (1978–1982). Life and career Smithers grew up with her parents and three sisters in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, and attended what is now William Howard Taft Charter High School there.
