The Tunis-Goulette-Marsa or TGM is a ( standard gauge) commuter rail line in Tunisia. It links the capital city, Tunis, with the town of La Marsa via La Goulette. Overview The TGM was the first railway in Tunisia. It was inaugurated in 1872, and has been known as the TGM since 1905. It is part of the transportation system of the Tunis area, and is managed by the (''Transtu''), which also manages the light rail of Tunis (). Transtu was founded in 2003 by joining the ' (SMLT, founded 1981) and the ''Société nationale de transports'' (SNT, founded 1963). Tunis Marine is a railway station in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, and forms the southern terminus of the standard gauge Tunis-Goulette-Marsa railway or "TGM", which was inaugurated in 1872. The line and station are managed by the (''Transtu''). The service depot for the line's trains is adjacent, to the north, reached by a level crossing over Avenue Habib Bourguiba (formerly called ). The Tunis Metro (''Tunis light metro'', also Tunis light rail, aeb, المترو الخفيف لمدينة تونس, ''el-metrū el-khfīf li-mdīnat tūnis'') is an expanding public transportation network for the Tunis metropolitan area that was started in 1985. It is a light rail system. Tunis Metro's light rail system has its track at surface level generally with its own rail bed, but at key intersections, the system goes underground to avoid congestion or has the right of way. Together with the TGM commuter rail line, it is managed by the parastatal transport authority Société des transports de Tunis (''Transtu''). La Marsa ( aeb, المرسى ') is a coastal town in far north eastern Tunisia near the capital Tunis. The population is estimated as 92,987, as of 2014. La Goulette (, it, La Goletta), in Arabic Halq al-Wadi ( '), is a municipality and the port of Tunis, Tunisia. La Goulette is located at around on a sandbar between Lake Tūnis and the Gulf of Tunis. The port, located 12km east of Tunis, is the point of convergence of Tunisia's major road and rail networks. La Goulette is linked to Tunis by the TGM railway and to Europe by a ferry service. Named for a religious figure who lived there, Abu Said al-Baji, it was previously called Jabal el-Menar. The town itself is a tourist attraction and is known for its extensive use of blue and white. It can be reached by a TGM train, which runs from Tunis to La Marsa. History In the 12th century/13th century AD Abu Said Ibn Khalaf Yahya al-Tamimi al-Beji arrived in the village of Jabal el-Menar and established a sanctuary. During the 1920s, Rodolphe d'Erlanger introduced the blue-white theme to the town. The Société des transports de Tunis or Transtu is the parastatal authority to manage public mass transit in the greater Tunis area ( Grand Tunis). It supervises the bus network, the Métro léger de Tunis (a light railway system) and the TGM light rail link to La Marsa. Transtu was founded in 2003 when the ''Société nationale des transports'' (SNT) and the ''Société du métro léger de Tunis'' (SMLT) were combined. Annually Transtu handles about 460 million passagers. Carthage
Carthage was the capital city of Ancient Carthage, on the eastern side of the Lake of Tunis in what is now Tunisia. Carthage was one of the most important trading hubs of the Ancient Mediterranean and one of the most affluent cities of the classical world.
