Tunes (Silves)
Tunes is a village in the civil parish of Algoz e Tunes, in the municipality of Silves, in Algarve region, Portugal. It was the seat of its own civil parish until 2013 when the parish of Tunes merged into the new parish of Algoz e Tunes. In 2001 there were 2002 inhabitants, in an area of approximately : there were 167 residents per kilometre square. Tunes is an important railway hub in southern Portugal. History The opinion that persists around the toponymic name of the area, ''Tunes'', is that it was so named for the number of colonists from north Africa, primarily from Tunis. Those who believe in this origin site the medieval French marigold (''Tagetes patula'') flower of Tunes, a herbaceous plant similar to the carnation (with cut petals and yellow flower) and common in Tunes, Portugal as well as in Tunisia. Algarve
The Algarve (, , ; from ) is the southernmost NUTS II region of continental Portugal. The Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle is a French jet airliner produced by Sud Aviation. It was developed by SNCASE in the early 1950s and made its maiden flight on 27 May 1955. It included some de Havilland designs and components developed for the de Havilland Comet. SNCASE merged into the larger Sud Aviation conglomerate before the aircraft entered revenue service on 26 April 1959 with Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS); 282 were built until production ended in 1972. Ferragudo
Ferragudo is a Portuguese civil parish at the western border of the municipality of Lagoa. The population in 2011 was 1,973, in an area of 5.41 km². Ferragudo serves mainly as a bedroom community for its much larger neighbour, the city of Portimão; its residents routinely travel across the Arade River to work in the neighboring municipality. HermÃnio da Palma Inácio (1922–2009) was a Portuguese revolutionary against the Salazar dictatorship. Biography Palma Inácio began the anti-fascist struggle at age 25 as a member of the Golpe dos Militares, a movement launched on 10 April 1947. He carried out the sabotage of airplanes at the Granja Air Base in Sintra, where he had served under General Humberto Delgado. He was arrested by the PIDE, Portugal's secret police, after seven months of hiding on a farm in Odivelas, and was imprisoned at the Cadeia do Aljube. He escaped on 16 May 1948, with four sheets wrapped around his legs under his pants, he joined the other inmates in line for the bathroom.
