Frank Coombs (United States Representative)
Frank Leslie Coombs (December 27, 1853 – October 5, 1934) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a congressman from California from 1901 to 1903. Life Frank Leslie Coombs was born in Napa, California, the son of Nathan Coombs and Maria Isabel Gordon. His maternal grandparents were William Gordon (who was a naturalized Mexican citizen originally from Ohio) and Juana Maria Lucero (who was Mexican). Coombs attended the public schools in California and Dorchester High School in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from the law department of Columbian University (now George Washington University Law School), Washington, D.C., in 1875. Coombs was admitted to the bar in 1875 and commenced practice in Napa. He was the District Attorney of Napa County from 1880 to 1885. Napa Valley
Napa Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) located in Napa County in California's Wine Country. It was established by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) on January 27, 1981. Napa Valley is considered one of the premier wine regions in the world. Records of commercial wine production in the region date back to the nineteenth century, but premium wine production dates back only to the 1960s. John Patchett
John Patchett (1797–1876) was the first person to plant a commercial vineyard and build a commercial wine cellar in the Napa Valley in California. Patchett planted his vineyard in 1854 and started making wine in 1857. Patchett established his winery in Napa in 1858. Biography Patchett was born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1797 and immigrated to the United States when he was 20 years old. He trained as a brewmaster in Pennsylvania, but was not able to find work. He met and married his wife Esther Passmore there in 1820, and took up farming, moving west first to Ohio, then Illinois and then Iowa. In 1850, the Patchetts were lured by the California Gold Rush and moved to Hangtown which is now known as Placerville, California. He began mining for gold in the fall of 1850 and his wife Esther died in November of that year. Henry William Heisch
Henry W. Heisch (June 10, 1872 – 1941) was a Private serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Boxer Rebellion who received the Medal of Honor for bravery. Biography Heisch was born June 10, 1872, in Latendorf, Germany, and after entering the Marine Corps, he was sent as a private to China to fight in the Boxer Rebellion. While fighting the enemy in Tientsin, China on June 20, 1900, he and a few other soldiers crossed the river in a small boat while under heavy fire and they assisted in destroying buildings occupied by the enemy. For this action, he received the Medal of Honor from President Theodore Roosevelt on March 22, 1902. He died in 1941 in Napa County, California and is buried in Napa, California at Tulocay Cemetery. George Washington Gift (1833–1879), U. S. Navy officer, writer, banker, civil engineer, politician, Confederate Navy officer, businessman, and newspaper editor. Early life A native of Tennessee, he was born near Nashville, Tennessee, March 1, 1833. Gift entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, 1846. Following his graduation he was assigned as a midshipman to the Pacific Squadron, in 1848. He resigned from the U.S. Naval service, in 1852 and settled in California. In 1854, he published "The Settler's Guide" about California's land laws. Nathan Coombs
Nathan Coombs (June 12, 1826 – December 26, 1877) was a California pioneer and Democratic politician who served in the California State Assembly and is best known for founding the city of Napa, California. Life Nathan Coombs lived in Massachusetts and came overland to Oregon in 1842. Coombs came to California in 1843, first working for Steven Smith in Bodega Bay; and then for William Gordon at Rancho Quesesosi in Yolo County. In 1845 he married William Gordon's daughter Maria Isabel Gordon (1831–1890). Coombs came to Napa Valley in 1845 and purchased a small part of Rancho Tulucay on the east side of the Napa River from Juarez Cayetano. Coombs participated in the Bear Flag Revolt of 1846.
