The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Shane Dooley
Shane Dooley (born 26 September 1986) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a right corner-forward for the Offaly senior team. Born in Tullamore, County Offaly, Dooley was born into a strong hurling family. His paternal and maternal granduncles as well as his grandfather enjoyed All-Ireland success with the Offaly junior team in 1923 and 1929. His father, Joe Dooley, and his uncles, Johnny and Billy Dooley, won seven All-Ireland medals between them between 1985 and 1998. Dooley first played competitive inter-county hurling and Gaelic football with Tullamore College. Here he won a Leinster Vocational Schools Junior B Championship medal and an All-Ireland Vocational Schools Championship medal. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. Coolderry GAA
Coolderry GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Coolderry in County Offaly, Ireland. The club is the most successful side in the Offaly Senior Hurling Championship with a record 31 titles. Its facilities include a clubhouse with four dressing rooms, floodlights, ball wall, two pitches, a running track and a gym. Its most recent win was 2018 beating Kilcormac Kiloughey. History The club was founded in the early 1880s. Coolderry's first victory was in 1890 when Coolderry beat Kilcormac, but Offaly was not at that time affiliated to the central body, the win was not officially recognised. The team's first Senior Final winning team was in 1899. Between 1899 and 1916 Coolderry won 10 Senior Titles, and in the 10 Championship Finals they only conceded 2 goals. Birr GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Birr in County Offaly, Ireland. The club is almost exclusively concerned with the game hurling and is one of the most successful hurling clubs in the country. While a number of teams represented Birr in the 1880s and 1890s, the current club was formally founded in 1909. Rhode GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located just outside the Village of Rhode in County Offaly, Ireland. With 30 Senior Football wins they are the most successful team in Offaly GAA football history. History The first recorded football match played by Rhode was on 17 March 1889 against Portarlington GAA. The outcome was a defeat for Rhode. The first appearance for Rhode in an Offaly football final was in 1891, however the match was unofficial and the facts about the match are unclear. Kevin Martin (hurler)
Kevin Martin (born 1973) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. His league and championship career with the Offaly senior team lasted ten seasons from 1993 until 2003. Born in Tullamore, County Offaly, Martin first played competitive hurling and Gaelic football at juvenile and underage levels with the Tullamore club. He later became a dual player at highest levels, winning two county football championship medals and one county hurling championship medal. Martin made his debut with the Offaly senior team during the 1993-94 league. Over the course of the following ten years he won All-Ireland medals in 1994 and 1998. Martin also won two Leinster medals and two All Star awards. He played his last game for Offaly in March 2003. In retirement from playing Martin became involved in team management and coaching at all levels. In 2009 he was player-manager as Tullamore claimed their first championship title in 45 years. Martin Furlong
Martin Furlong (born 14 September 1946 in Tullamore, County Offaly) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played for his local club Tullamore and was the first-choice goalkeeper at senior level on the Offaly county team from 1966 until 1985. Furlong is the only Offaly player to have won three All-Ireland SFC medals in 1971, 1972 and 1982. He also won an All-Ireland Minor Football Championship in 1964. He won the Texaco Footballer of the Year in 1982 after Offaly's All-Ireland SFC win. In 1989 Martin moved from Clonminch, Tullamore to America following the request of him older brother Tom, to assist him in running his bar. Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship
The Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The national media covers the competition. History The junior championship dates back to 1907. It was the second hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was originally seen as a second tier championship for teams that were too weak for the senior hurling championships. Kinnitty defeated Kilcormac–Killoughey in the 2020 championship decider, played in the summer of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games.
