Trà Kiệu is a village in Duy Sơn commune, Duy Xuyên district, Quảng Nam province, Vietnam. Geography Trà Kiệu is located in the Thu Bồn river valley inland from Hội An, which has since moved putting the site on the southern bank of the Bà Rén river, a tributary of the Thu Bồn river. History Trà Kiệu was the first capital city of the Hindu Champa Kingdom, then named Simhapura, from the 4th century to the 8th century CE.Prior, R. (2000). Champa was an Southeast Asian civilization that flourished along the coasts of what is now central and southern Vietnam for roughly a one thousand-year period between 500 and 1700 AD. The original Cham and Proto-Chamic peoples were mainland Austronesian sailors, who adopted as their principal vocations those of trade, shipping, and piracy. Their cities were ports of call on important trade routes linking India, China and the Indonesian islands. The history of Champa was one of intermittent conflict and cooperation with the people of Java, the Khmer of Angkor in Cambodia and Đại Việt (Annam) of the Vietnamese in what is now northern Vietnam. It was to Dai Viet that Champa finally lost its independence. Our Lady of Trà Kiệu ( vi, Đức Mẹ Trà Kiệu is the name given by Vietnamese Catholics to a Marian apparition in a shrine built in 1898 on Bửu Châu hill east of Trà Kiệu village in Duy Sơn commune, Duy Xuyên district, Quảng Nam province, Vietnam. The shrine was dedicated to Our Lady Help of Christians in remembrance of the Virgin Mary's help in the Catholic resistance to the Cần Vương movement at this location in 1885. On May 31, 1971, Bishop Phêrô Maria Phạm Ngọc Chi selected Trà Kiệu as the location of the Marian Center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Đà Nẵng. The diocese organizes an annual Our Lady of Trà Kiệu Festival on May 31. A Marian apparition is a reported supernatural appearance by Mary, the mother of Jesus, or a series of related such appearances during a period of time. In the Catholic Church, in order for a reported appearance to be classified as a Marian apparition, the person or persons who claim to see Mary (the "seers") must claim that they see her visually located in their environment. If the person claims to hear Mary but not see her, this is known as an interior locution, not an apparition. Cần Vương Movement
The Cần Vương (, Hán tự: , ) movement was a large-scale Vietnamese insurgency between 1885 and 1889 against French colonial rule. Its objective was to expel the French and install the Hàm Nghi Emperor as the leader of an independent Vietnam. The movement lacked a coherent national structure and consisted mainly of regional leaders who attacked French troops in their own provinces. The movement initially prospered as there were only a few French garrisons in Annam, but failed after the French recovered from the surprise of the insurgency and poured troops into Annam from bases in Tonkin and Cochinchina.
