Trash and Vaudeville is a store located at 96 East 7th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue in East Village in Manhattan, New York. The store is associated with the clothing styles of punk rock and various other counter culture movements, and has been a leading source of fashion inspiration since its inception by owner and founder Ray Goodman in 1975. History Ray Goodman founded Trash & Vaudeville in 1975 at 4 Saint Marks Place, New York, NY. The store occupied two floors within the historic Hamilton-Holly House building on St. Mark's Place from 1975 to February 2016. The basement formerly housed a pinball parlor directly below the upstairs, which was accessed by an iron staircase. Although physically separated as two stores, they were regarded as one entity. Hamilton-Holly House
The Hamilton-Holly House, located at 4 St. Mark's Place (Manhattan), St. Mark's Place in the East Village, Manhattan, East Village section of Manhattan, is a Federal style townhouse constructed in 1831. A designated landmark, it was the home of Eliza Hamilton, the widow of Alexander Hamilton, from 1833 to 1842. The Trash and Vaudeville fashion store was located there for over forty years ending in 2016. Building and initial development The property was developed by Thomas E. Davis, a British-born real estate developer, who developed the entire block of St. Mark's Place (the name of East 8th Street in this area) between Third and Second Avenues. Davis built Federal style townhouses on both sides of the street. There are two other surviving townhouses from this development, at 25 St. Mark's Place and the best preserved of the three, the Daniel LeRoy House at 20 St. Mark's Place. The Clash
The Clash were an English rock band formed in London in 1976 who were key players in the original wave of British punk rock. Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", they also contributed to the and new wave movements that emerged in the wake of punk and employed elements of a variety of genres including reggae, dub, funk, ska, and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, the Clash consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Joe Strummer, lead guitarist and vocalist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon, and drummer Nicky "Topper" Headon. Headon left the group in 1982 due to internal friction surrounding his increasing heroin addiction. Further internal friction led to Jones' departure the following year. Winklepicker
Winklepickers, or winkle pickers, are a style of shoe or boot worn from the 1950s onward, especially popular with British rock and roll fans such as teddy boys. The feature that gives both the boot and shoe their name is the very sharp and long pointed toe, reminiscent of medieval footwear and approximately the same as the long pointed toes on some women's high-fashion shoes and boots in the 2000s. The extremely pointed toe was called the ''winkle picker'' because in England periwinkle snails, or winkles, are a popular seaside snack which is eaten using a pin or other pointed object to extract the soft parts out of the coiled shell carefully, hence the phrase: "to winkle something out", and based on that, ''winklepickers'' became a humorous name for shoes with a very pointed tip. James Kenneth Webb (August 28, 1957 – April 14, 2020) was a punk fashion stylist and the long-time manager of New York City's Trash and Vaudeville. Webb worked at Trash and Vaudeville from 1999 until the store moved off of St. Marks Place in 2016. As a stylist, Webb helped to dress artists and musicians such as the Ramones, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Joan Jett, Sebastian Bach and many others. On October 13, 2017, Webb opened his own rock boutique in New York City called "I Need More", named after a song by Iggy Pop, at 75A Orchard Street. Avenue A is a north–south avenue located in Manhattan, New York City, east of First Avenue and west of Avenue B. It runs from Houston Street to 14th Street, where it continues into a loop road in Stuyvesant Town, connecting to Avenue B. Below Houston Street, Avenue A continues as Essex Street. It is considered to be the western border of Alphabet City in the East Village. It is also the western border of Tompkins Square Park.
