''Transformation (The Speed of Love)'' is an album by keyboard player and guitarist David Sancious and his band Tone. It was recorded at Caribou Ranch in Colorado during October and November 1975, and was released by Epic Records in 1976. On the album, Sancious is joined by bassist Gerald Carboy and drummer Ernest Carter. Vocalist Gayle Moran also appears on one track. Reception The editors of AllMusic awarded the album a full five stars, and reviewer Thom Jurek wrote: "As an album, ''Transformation (The Speed of Love)'' is awe-inspiring, a work of progged-out jazz-rock that's as iconic as ''Birds of Fire'', ''Blow by Blow'', or ''Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy'', yet stands alone for its artful ambition and emotional commitment." Jon Davis, writing for Exposé Online, stated that the album "compares favorably with the classics of its time," although "Sancious plies his own path, with elements of Mahavishnu, but with some of the Eastern esoterica replaced by earthy American blues." ... David Sancious
David Sancious (born November 30, 1953) is an American musician. He was an early member of Bruce Springsteen's backing group, the E Street Band, and contributed to the first three Springsteen albums, and again on ''Human Touch'' (1992), '' Tracks'' (1998), and ''Western Stars'' (2019). Sancious is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known as a keyboard player and guitarist. He left the E Street Band in 1974 to form his own band, Tone, and released several albums. He subsequently became a popular session and touring musician, most notably for Stanley Clarke, Narada Michael Walden, Zucchero Fornaciari, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, Jack Bruce, and Sting among many others. In 2014, Sancious was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band. Tone (band)
Tone (also known as David Sancious and Tone) was a jazz-fusion band founded in 1974 by former E Street Band keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Ernest "Boom" Carter. They made half a dozen albums between 1974 and 1980, some of which were billed as Sancious solo projects. History In August 1974 Sancious and Carter left the E Street Band and formed their own band Tone with bassist Gerald Carboy. At various times the band would feature Gail Boggs, Brenda Madison, Patti Scialfa, Gayle Moran (from Return To Forever and The Mahavishnu Orchestra), former Brian Auger, and future Santana vocalist Alex Ligertwood. Bruce Springsteen encouraged Sancious in his solo career and made sure music executives heard his demos, leading to a contract with Epic Records. Caribou Ranch
Caribou Ranch was a recording studio built by producer James William Guercio in 1972 in a converted barn on ranch property in the Rocky Mountains near Nederland, Colorado, on the road that leads to the ghost town of Caribou. The studio was in operation until it was damaged in a fire in March 1985. The ranch hosted some of the most prominent acts of the 1970s and 80s and was closely associated with the band Chicago, who recorded five consecutive albums there between 1973 and 1977. History In 1971, Guercio purchased Caribou Ranch, comprising more than of ranch property in the Rocky Mountains. The next year, Joe Walsh and Bill Szymczyk were starting work on '' Barnstorm'' at Walsh's home in Colorado when a mixer blew out on the first day. Jazz Fusion
Jazz fusion (also known as fusion and progressive jazz) is a music genre that developed in the late 1960s when musicians combined jazz harmony and jazz improvisation, improvisation with rock music, funk, and rhythm and blues. Electric guitars, amplifiers, and keyboards that were popular in rock and roll started to be used by jazz musicians, particularly those who had grown up listening to rock and roll. Jazz fusion arrangements vary in complexity. Some employ groove-based vamps fixed to a single key or a single chord with a simple, repeated melody. Others use elaborate chord progressions, unconventional time signatures, or melodies with counter-melodies. These arrangements, whether simple or complex, typically include improvised sections that can vary in length, much like in other forms of jazz. Bruce Botnick
Bruce Botnick (born 1945) is an American audio engineer and record producer, best known for his work with the Doors, the Beach Boys, Eddie Money, Love and film composer Jerry Goldsmith. Early work Botnick engineered Love's first two albums, and co-produced their third album, ''Forever Changes'', with the band's singer-songwriter, Arthur Lee. He also is listed as the one of two recording engineers on the 1965 Curtis Amy LP ''The Sounds of Broadway - The Sounds of Hollywood'' - said to have been released in 1965, although it also has been said to have been released earlier. Ernest Carter (drummer)
Ernest Carter is an American drummer. He has toured and recorded with, among others, Bruce Springsteen, David Sancious, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and Paul Butterfield. During his time with Springsteen, he played the drums on the song "Born to Run". Able to play all forms of rock as well as rhythm and blues, soul and jazz, Carter was formally trained and blends a variety of styles into his drumming.Charles R. Gayle Moran (born 1943) is a vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter. She is from Spring Arbor, Michigan and graduated from Spring Arbor High School (now Spring Arbor University) in 1961. She was a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra during the mid-1970s, appearing on ''Apocalypse (Mahavishnu Orchestra album), Apocalypse'' (1974) and ''Visions of the Emerald Beyond'' (1975).
