A Transfare is an inter-modal ticket available for a single journey within Tyne & Wear. Transport modes Rail Transfare tickets are valid on: * All Tyne & Wear Metro services. * Northern services between Newcastle and Sunderland via Heworth. * Northern services between Newcastle and Blaydon via MetroCentre. A rail journey counts as a single 'leg', even if it involves a change between Metro lines or between Metro and Northern Rail services. Ferry Transfare tickets are valid on the Shields Ferry across the River Tyne. Tyne & Wear Metro
The Tyne and Wear Metro is an overground and underground light rail rapid transit system serving Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, and the City of Sunderland (together forming Tyne and Wear). The network opened in stages from August 1980 and now serves a total of 60 stations, with two lines covering of track. The Metro can be accessed from a mixture of under ground and above ground stations. It has been described as the "first modern light rail system in the United Kingdom". The system is currently owned and operated by the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (branded as Nexus), thus is fully under public ownership and operation. Blaydon
Blaydon is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, and historically in County Durham. Blaydon, and neighbouring Winlaton, which Blaydon is now contiguous with, form the postal town of Blaydon-on-Tyne. The Blaydon/Winlaton resident population in 2011 was 13,896. Shields Ferry
The Shields Ferry operates across the River Tyne, between North Shields and South Shields in Tyne and Wear, England. The service is operated by the Nexus, the Tyne and Wear PTE. Prior to takeover by the PTE in 1972, it was known as the Market Place Ferry. History Records suggest that there have been ferries operating across the River Tyne since 1377. By 1929, there were a total of eleven ferries crossing the River Tyne between Newburn and Tynemouth. Following the opening of the Tyne Tunnel between Jarrow and Howdon in October 1967, ferry traffic saw a significant decline. Today, the Shields Ferry is the only ferry service that remains. The service provides a viable alternative to travelling by Metro via Newcastle, or by road via the Tyne Tunnel. The ferry can be used by cyclists, and is part of the National Cycle Route 1. MetroCentre (shopping Centre)
Metrocentre is a shopping centre and entertainment complex in the Dunston, Tyne and Wear, Dunston area of Gateshead. It is located on the former site of Dunston Power Station, near to the River Tyne. Metrocentre opened in stages, with the first phase opening on 28 April 1986, and the official opening being held on 14 October that year. It has more than 300 shops occupying over of retail floor space, making it the second-largest shopping centre in the UK, behind Westfield London. Gateshead () is a large town in northern England. It is on the River Tyne's southern bank, opposite Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle to which it is joined by seven bridges.
