Tozammel Tony Huq
Tozammel “Tony” Huq MBE is a retired educationist, community worker and activist of Bangladeshi origin based in Birmingham. During his working life he served variously as a teacher, a diplomat and a special adviser for UNESCO. Early life and education Tozammel Huq was born on 1 February 1940 to middle-class parents in Naogaon, Bangladesh (at that time part of British India). He attended Naogaon High School and Rajshahi Government College, took B.A. (Honours) and M.A. (Honours) degrees in economics from Rajshahi University and was for a while a student of Dhaka University. His involvement in student politics led to his arrest and a six-month period of imprisonment under the regime of Ayub Khan, temporarily halting his student career. Huq then spent a year in Canada, pursuing doctoral studies in law at McGill University, Montreal, before moving to London. Free Radio Birmingham is an Independent Local Radio station based in Birmingham, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Birmingham and the West Midlands. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 165,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History Launched on 19 February 1974, on 261 metres medium wave, (1152kHz) and 94.8 MHz FM, BRMB was the fourth independent local commercial radio station to begin broadcasting in Britain after LBC, Capital London and Radio Clyde. Syed Muazzem Ali
Syed Muazzem Ali (18 July 1944 – 30 December 2019) was a Bangladeshi foreign service officer and career diplomat. In 2020, he was posthumously conferred the Padma Bhushan award, the third-highest civilian honour of India. Early life Ali was born on 18 July 1944 into a Bengali Muslim family from the Sylhet district, Assam Province in British Raj. He traced his paternal descent from Shah Ahmed Mutawakkil, a local holy man and a Syed of Taraf, though apparently unrelated to Taraf's ruling Syed dynasty. Ali's father was Syed Mostafa Ali, a civil servant employed by the British Raj in Assam Province. He completed his bachelor's and master's in zoology with first class from the University of Dhaka. He joined the Pakistan Civil Service and was trained at the Civil Service Academy in Lahore. From 1973 to 1974 he studied at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University. International Mother Language Day
International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly with the adoption of UN resolution 56/262 in 2002. Mother Language Day is part of a broader initiative "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world" as adopted by the UN General Assembly on 16 May 2007 in UN resolution 61/266, which also established 2008 as the International Year of Languages.
