Townhead Greyhound Track was a former greyhound racing track in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. It was located on the north bank of the River Irvine The River Irvine ( gd, Irbhinn) is a river that flows through southwest Scotland. Its watershed is on the Lanarkshire border of Ayrshire at an altitude of above sea-level, near Loudoun Hill, Drumclog, and SW by W of Strathaven. It flows west ... between Broomlands Drive and Kirk Vennel and would have been situated where Bradbury Glebe is today. The track opened on 30 December 1932 eight months before the Irvine Caledonian Stadium. Handicap and level break racing took place on Thursday and Saturday evenings on a small 300 yards circumference circuit. Distances used were 280 and 460 yards behind a 'Ball' hare. River Irvine
The River Irvine ( gd, Irbhinn) is a river that flows through southwest Scotland. Its watershed is on the Lanarkshire border of Ayrshire at an altitude of above sea-level, near Loudoun Hill, Drumclog, and SW by W of Strathaven. It flows westward, dividing the old district of Cunninghame from that of Kyle, until it reaches the sea via Irvine Harbour in the form of the Firth of Clyde, and flows into Irvine Bay by the town of Irvine. It has many tributaries, some of which form parish, district and other boundaries. Etymology ''Irvine'' was first recorded in 1258 as ''Yrewyn'', and several etymologies have been proposed. Irvine Caledonian Stadium
Irvine Caledonian Stadium was a greyhound racing stadium in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. The first greyhound meeting at Irvine took place on 21 August 1933. Known as the Caledonian Stadium it was located between Bank Street and Quarry Road. It is not to be confused with the location of a football ground and running track that was built adjacent on the north side some years later. The track which was independent (unlicensed) was 400 yards in circumference resulting in race distances of 120, 325, 525 and 725 yards with an uphill finish. The main event was the Marymass Handicap and there were two covered stands and kennels for 48 greyhounds. Racing was held on Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon and the hare was an Outside McKee Scott.
