Tour-en-Bessin (, literally ''Tour in Bessin'') is a Communes of France, commune in the Calvados (department), Calvados Departments of France, department in the Normandy (administrative region), Normandy Regions of France, region in northwestern France. History World War II After the liberation of the area by Allied Forces in 1944, engineers of the Ninth Air Force IX Engineering Command began construction of a combat Advanced Landing Ground outside of the town. Declared operational on 28 July, the airfield was designated as "Tour-en-Bessin Airfield, A-13", it was used by several fighter and bomber units until mid-September. Tour-en-Bessin Airfield
Tour-en-Bessin Airfield is a now-abandoned World War II military airfield near the Communes of France, commune of Tour-en-Bessin in the Normandy Regions of France, region of northern France. The United States Army Air Force established a temporary airfield on 12 July 1944, shortly after the Operation Overlord, Allied landings in France. It was constructed by the IX Engineering Command, 833rd and 846th Engineer Aviation Battalions. History Known as Advanced Landing Ground "A-13", the airfield consisted of a main 5000 foot long (1500 m) pierced steel planking (PSP) runway aligned 12/30 and a secondary 5000 foot PSP runway aligned 01/19. Tents were used for billeting and support facilities. An access road was built to the existing road infrastructure, as were a dump for supplies, ammunition, and gasoline drums, along with a potable water and electrical power for communications and station lighting. Advanced Landing Ground
Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) were temporary advance airfields constructed by the Allies during World War II during the liberation of Europe. They were built in the UK prior to the invasion and thereafter in northwest Europe from 6 June 1944 to V-E Day, 7 May 1945. Unlike the permanent airfields built in the United Kingdom and designed for the strategic bombardment of Germany, the tactical combat airfields on the continent were temporary, often improvised airfields to be used by the tactical air forces to support the advancing ground armies engaged on the battlefield.
