Knocking on wood (also phrased touching wood) is an apotropaic tradition of literally touching, tapping, or knocking on wood, or merely stating that one is doing or intending to do so, in order to avoid "tempting fate" after making a favorable prediction or boast, or a declaration concerning one's own death or another unfavorable situation. Origin A common explanation traces the phenomenon to ancient Celtic peoples, who believed it called on spirits or gods of the trees, while Christians tie the practice to the wood of the cross of crucifixion. A more modern theory from folklore researcher Steve Roud suggests it derives from a form of tag called "Tiggy Touchwood" in which players are safe from being tagged if they are touching wood. Touchwood Hills
Touchwood Hills are a range of hills located in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The hills are composed of the "Big" Touchwood Hills and the Little Touchwood Hills. Together they are referred to as the Touchwood Uplands. The hills are in the Prairie Pothole Region of North America, which extends throughout three Canadian provinces and five U.S. states, and within Palliser's Triangle and the Great Plains ecoregion of Canada. The hills make up a large plateau that is north-east of Saskatchewan's capital city, Regina. To the west of the hills is Last Mountain Lake; to the north are the Quill Lakes, Foam Lake, and Fishing Lake; to the east is Good Spirit Lake; and to the south is the Qu'Appelle Valley. Touchwood is a former provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Touchwood Hills Post Provincial Park
Touchwood Hills Post Provincial Park is the location of a former Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) fur trading post that existed from 1879 to 1909 in the Touchwood Uplands of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. In 1986, the site was designated a provincial park. It is located along Highway 15 in the RM of Kellross No. 247, about west of Lestock and east of Punnichy. The park is in size and consists of cellar depressions and other archaeological remains from the historic post, including the remnants of the marks left by Red River carts on this segment of the Carlton Trail. There is also a plaque and concrete markers outlining the locations of the original buildings. It is a day-use site only as there are only picnic tables and no other services.
