Total Digital Access To The League Of Nations Archives Project (LONTAD)
The Total Digital Access to the League of Nations Archives Project, or LONTAD is a grant-funded large-scale digitization project to digitize, preserve, and provide online access to the archives of the League of Nations. Its fundamental aim is to modernize access to the archives for researchers, education institutions, and the general public. The project will result in 250 terabytes of data (nearly 30 million digital files), over 500,000 units of descriptive metadata, and the rehousing, preservation and conservation of the physical archives (nearly 3 linear kilometers). The project is managed by the Institutional Memory Section (IMS) of the Library of the United Nations Office at Geneva. Launched in 2017, it is scheduled for completion in 2022. Mass digitization is a term used to describe "large-scale digitization projects of varying scopes." Such projects include efforts to digitize physical books, on a mass scale, to make knowledge openly and publicly accessible and are made possible by selecting cultural objects, prepping them, scanning them, and constructing necessary digital infrastructures including digital libraries. These projects are often piloted by cultural institutions and private bodies, however, individuals may attempt to conduct a mass digitization effort as well. The World Digital Library (WDL) is an international digital library operated by UNESCO and the United States Library of Congress. ISAD(G) (General International Standard Archival Description) defines the elements that should be included in an archival finding aid. It was approved by the International Council on Archives (ICA/CIA) as an international framework standard to register archival documents produced by corporations, persons and families.
