Toronto Golf Club
The Toronto Golf Club is a private golf club in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, a suburban municipality adjacent to Toronto. Established in Toronto in 1876, the Toronto Golf Club is the third oldest golf club in North America after Royal Montreal Golf Club, and the Royal Quebec Golf Club. In 1909, the golf club adopted its present name. The golf club moved to its present location in the early 20th century. The Toronto Golf Club has hosted the Canadian Open five times; and the Canadian Amateur Championship nine times, more than any other club. The Canadian Open (french: L'Omnium Canadien) is a professional golf tournament in Canada. It is co-organized by Golf Canada (formerly known as the Royal Canadian Golf Association) and the PGA Tour. It was first played in 1904, and has been held annually since then, except for during World War I, World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the third oldest continuously running tournament on the tour, after The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. It is the only national championship that is a PGA Tour-managed event. The Canadian Amateur Championship, begun in 1895, is the men's amateur golf championship of Canada. It is staged annually by Golf Canada. Harry Colt
Henry Shapland "Harry" Colt (4 August 1869 – 21 November 1951) was a golf course architect born in Highgate, England. He worked predominantly with Charles Alison, John Morrison, and Alister MacKenzie, in 1928 forming Colt, Alison & Morrison Ltd. He participated in the design or redesign of over 300 golf courses (115 on his own) in all six inhabited continents, including those at Wentworth Club, Sunningdale, Muirfield, Royal Portrush, and Royal Liverpool. Colt teamed up with George Crump in 1918 to design Pine Valley Golf Club, which is ranked as the #1 golf course in the United States, by ''Golf'' magazine (2017–18 ranking of the Top 100 Courses in the U.S.) and ''Golf Digest'' (2019–20 ranking of America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses). Royal Montreal Golf Club
The Royal Montreal Golf Club ( French: Le Club de Golf Royal Montréal) is the oldest golf club in North America, and the oldest in continuous existence. In 2023, it will be celebrating 150 years. It was founded in Montreal by eight men in 1873. Permission was granted by Queen Victoria to use the prefix "Royal" in 1884. History The club's first course was a 9-hole layout on Fletcher's Field in Mount Royal Park, which the red-coated golfers shared with the public on the then outskirts of Montreal. Mr. Alexander Dennistoun, a Scottish born man, is known as the first Club's Captain. The club continues to recognize his name in honouring the men's club champion trophy. Royal Quebec Golf Club
The Royal-Quebec Golf Club ( French: Club de Golf Royal Québec) is a golf course founded in 1874 in Boischatel by members of the local business community, mainly Scots-Quebecers bankers and businessmen. Located approximately 12 miles (18 km) east of Quebec City near Montmorency Falls, it has been a semi-private club since 1925. One of the oldest golf clubs in North America, the current 36-hole facility is located on a 186 hectare piece of land with pine trees that have been growing since the club was founded. Etobicoke Creek
Etobicoke Creek is a river in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario, Canada. It is a tributary of Lake Ontario and runs from Caledon, Ontario, Caledon to southern Etobicoke, part of the City of Toronto. The creek is within the jurisdiction of the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Etymology The name "Etobicoke" was derived from the Mississaugas, Mississauga word ''wah-do-be-kang'' (''wadoopikaang''), meaning "place where the alders grow", which was used to describe the area between Etobicoke Creek and the Humber River (Toronto), Humber River. George Cumming (golfer)
George Cumming (20 May 1879 – 26 March 1950) was a Scottish-Canadian professional golfer and club maker. Cumming was often referred to as the "Dean of Canadian Professional Golfers" and his teachings as proprietor of the Toronto Golf Club launched the career of many of Canada's best known professional golfers. He won the Canadian Open (golf), Canadian Open in 1905 and three of his assistants won the championship in the following years: Charlie Murray (golfer), Charles Murray, Albert Murray (golfer), Albert Murray and Karl Keffer, each winning the championship twice. Cumming finished in ninth place in the 1905 U.S. Open (golf), 1905 U.S. Open. He carded rounds of 85-82-75-81=323 and won United States dollar, $30.
