Tornillo ( ) is a census-designated place (CDP) and border town in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Tornillo and Guadalupe, Chihuahua, area is connected by the Tornillo-Guadalupe Bridge. The town is the home of Sonic Ranch, the world's largest residential recording complex. In June 2018, the US government opened a tent city detention camp for migrant children at the Marcelino Serna Port of Entry on the Mexican border in Tornillo. The ZIP Codes encompassing the CDP area are 79838 and 79853. By 11 January 2019 the last migrant child had been moved out of the camp, and was now en route to, or placed with, vetted sponsors. State Highway 20 (SH 20) is a highway maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) that runs from New Mexico State Road 460 at the state line between Texas and New Mexico at Anthony in El Paso County to Interstate 10 at McNary in Hudspeth County. Tornillo Port Of Entry
The Marcelino Serna Port of Entry (formerly the Tornillo Port of Entry) is a crossing of the United States–Mexico border. It opened on November 17, 2014, replacing the nearby Fabens Port of Entry. The crossing is built around the Tornillo–Guadalupe International Bridge about west of the previous two-lane Fabens–Caseta International Bridge and can accommodate vehicular, pedestrian, and commercial traffic. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility at the crossing served as the site for the Tornillo tent city, which housed as many as 2,800 detained migrant youths from June 2018 to January 2019. , a 2,500-bed holding facility for adult migrants is under construction at the site.
