Torkel Weis-Fogh
Torkel Weis-Fogh (25 March 1922 – 13 November 1975) was a Danish zoologist and Professor at the University of Cambridge and the University of Copenhagen. He is best known for his contributions to the understanding of insect flight, especially the clap and fling mechanism used by very small insects. James Lighthill named this "the Weis-Fogh mechanism of lift generation". Education Weis-Fogh was born in Aarhus and educated at University of Copenhagen. Research and career Weis-Fogh was research assistant to the Danish Nobel Prize–winning physiologist August Krogh, where he studied the flight mechanism of the desert locust. He pioneered studies of insect flight with Krogh in a classic paper of 1951. He then spent a year at the Copenhagen Institute of Neurophysiology. Weis-Fogh then went to the University of Cambridge in England for four years, where he discovered a rubbery protein, resilin, in insect cuticle. He continued working on insect flight. Torkel Knutsson
Torkel (Tyrgils or Torgils) Knutsson (d. 1306) was Lord High Constable of Sweden, member of the Privy Council of Sweden (''Riksråd''), and virtual ruler of Sweden during the early reign of King Birger Magnusson (1280–1321). Biography Torkel hailed from an old noble family of West Geatish ancestry and was related to the House of Bjelbo (''Folkungaätten''). He was first mentioned in 1282. In documents from 1288, he is mentioned as a knight and a member of the privy council (''Riksråd''). Career Before his death, King Magnus Ladulås (ca. 1240-1290) ordered his kinsman, Torgils Knutsson, the Constable of the Realm, to be the guardian of his son Birger. When King Magnus Ladulås died, Torkel became regent for the underage Birger Magnusson (1280–1321). Torkel Halvorsen Aschehoug
Torkel Halvorsen Aschehoug (27 June 1822 – 20 January 1909) was a prominent Norwegian professor, legal scholar, historian and social economist. He also served as a conservative politician and Member of the Norwegian Parliament. Biography Torkel Halvorsen Aschehoug was born at Idd (now Halden) in Østfold, Norway. He grew up in a professional family in which his father and grandfather were both parish priests. He attended Fredrikshalds lærde skole in Halden. In 1839, he entered Royal Frederick University (now University of Oslo), where he later became a professor. In 1844, Aschehoug graduated with a law degree. He subsequently studied abroad with stops including England and Sweden. In 1852, Aschehoug began an over fifty-year career at the University of Oslo. Torkel Andreas Trønnes (17 March 1925 - 4 October 2011) was a Norwegian automobile advocate. In his younger days he was a rally driver, among others participating in the three times. He spent thirty years of his professional career as a technical director in Kongelig Norsk Automobilklub. He also wrote in their member magazine ''Motorliv''. He later worked two decades in the men's magazine ''Vi Menn''. He also became known for an attempt to petition politicians, in the campaign "''Nei til høyere Bensinpriser''" ('No to Higher Gas Prices'). The petition was signed by 370,000. He was also involved in the Norwegian Motor Trade Association and Trygg Trafikk. He resides in Koppang is a village in Stor-Elvdal Municipality in Innlandet county, Norway. Torkel Jonson Lende (17 November 1849 – 11 January 1909) was a Norwegian inventor. Biography In his young days he was a schoolmate of Arne Garborg. Like Garborg he took up teacher's studies, but he quit early to become an inventor. Torkel Opsahl
Torkel Opsahl (17 March 1931 in Stavanger — 16 September 1993 in Geneva) was a Norwegian human rights scholar, professor of the University of Oslo since 1965 and head of the board of its Human Rights Institute since 1987. From 1970 to 1984, he was a member of the European Commission of Human Rights. Between 1977 and 1986, he was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee. In 1992-1993 he chaired an independent commission exploring ways forward for Northern Ireland, out of which came the influential book 'A Citizens' Inquiry: the Opsahl Report on Northern Ireland'. Opsahl died from a heart attack at his office in Geneva on 16 September 1993. At the time of his death, he was chairing the UN commission on war crimes in the former Yugoslavia.
