Toodyay Historical Society
The Toodyay Historical Society started in Toodyay as the Toodyay Society in 1980 in conjunction with the Toodyay Tourist Centre. The first annual general meeting was held at the Country Women's Association hall on Stirling Terrace in April 1981. The society had annual "Craft in Action" days, "Newcastle Balls", and was involved in the preservation of Donegans Cottage. In 1992 the Society became affiliated with the Royal Western Australian Historical Society. In 1994 the Toodyay Society became the Toodyay Historical Society, and Rica Erickson became patron. As well as its own newsletter ''Duidgeeana'', the society has also published a chronology of Toodyay, entitled ''The long Toodyay chronology: events in Toodyay's history'', and a commemorative booklet on its own history. Toodyay, Western Australia
Toodyay (, nys, Duidgee), known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, is a town on the Avon River in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, north-east of Perth. The first European settlement occurred in the area in 1836. After flooding in the 1850s, the townsite was moved to its current location in the 1860s. It is connected by railway and road to Perth. During the 1860s, it was home to bushranger Moondyne Joe. History Origin of the name 'Toodyay' The meaning of the name is uncertain, although it is probably indigenous Noongar in origin. History Council Of Western Australia
The History Council of Western Australia is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the study, preservation and use of history in Western Australia. Founded in 2003, the History Council of Western Australia aims to promote an "active engagement with history" across broader society. The Council has actively engaged in historical advocacy campaigns since its formation, such as their engagement with the debate surrounding the 20112012 Elizabeth Quay development. The Council is run by an elected committee comprising historians and academics, while other parties and individuals can become members through a paid subscription. The Council works to promote historical engagement through the organisation and promotion of related events to the public. It produces several regular publications, including an annual report and a seasonal newsletter for members. Newcastle Gaol Museum
The Newcastle Gaol Museum is a prison museum on Clinton Street in Toodyay, Western Australia, founded in 1962. The museum records the history of the serial escapee Moondyne Joe and his imprisonment in the "native cell". History In the early days of settlement (1832) the military and the resident magistrate were stationed at York. Crimes at this time were mostly stealing of livestock. In June 1840, Governor John Hutt created a special police force, known as the Native Police, to deal with native offenders, as distinct from the civil police, which dealt with "white" settlers. The new force was led by John Drummond, who had become friendly with the Noongar people and, with his Aboriginal troopers, made regular patrols around the district. Samuel Pole Phillips was appointed as the local justice of the peace, to support the work of the resident magistrate. West Toodyay
West Toodyay (previously known as Toodyay; colloquially known as Old Toodyay) was the original location of the town of Toodyay, Western Australia. It is situated in the Toodyay valley, north east of Perth. The Toodyay valley, discovered by Ensign Robert Dale in 1831, was opened up for settlement in 1836. The original site for the town of Toodyay was determined in 1836 and its boundaries were finalized 1838. The first survey of the town was carried out in 1849. After several serious floods, the decision was made to move the town of Toodyay to higher ground. In 1860, the new town of Newcastle was established further upstream. Newcastle was renamed in 1910 to Toodyay, and the original site became known as West Toodyay. The Shire of Toodyay is a local government area in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, beyond the north-eastern limits of the Perth metropolitan area. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Toodyay. History The Toodyay Road District was established on 24 January 1871. The Newcastle (later Toodyay) townsite separated as the Municipality of Newcastle on 2 October 1877. The municipality merged back into the road district on 8 March 1912. Rica Erickson
Frederica Lucy "Rica" Erickson , née Sandilands, (10 August 1908 – 8 September 2009) was an Australian naturalist, botanical artist, historian, author and teacher. Without any formal scientific training, she wrote extensively on botany and birds, as well as genealogy and general history. Erickson authored ten books, co-authored four, was editor of twelve, and author or co-author of numerous papers and articles that have been printed in popular, scientific and encyclopaedic publications. Biography Born in Boulder, Western Australia, Erickson was the eldest of eight children of Phoebe Cooke and Christopher Sandilands, both of whom immigrated to Western Australia from Victoria in 1906, and met in the goldfield town. Christopher Sandilands was a farmer's son and worked at the Great Boulder Mine as a filter press hand. The family lived on Dwyer Street.
