Tony Shearer
Tony Shearer (born Fred Anthony Shearer October 27, 1926, Colorado, d. May 2002) was an American Mayanism proponent and New Age author who wrote books contributing to the modern popularization of syncretic beliefs in which elements of Maya calendrics are highlighted in the supposed significance of dates in December 2012 A.D., as well as August 1987 A.D. Shearer stated in the preface to his 1971 book that he withdrew from a promising career in conventional broadcast journalism in the 1960s in order to investigate the meaning of life, leading him to research and experience beliefs and practices of ancient and modern Mesoamericans. He then published a work titled "Quetzalcoatl: Lord of the Dawn" in June 1971. Mayanism
Mayanism is a non-codified eclectic collection of New Age beliefs, influenced in part by Pre-Columbian Maya mythology and some folk beliefs of the modern Maya peoples. Contemporary Mayanism places less emphasis on contacts between the ancient Maya and lost lands than in the work of early writers such as Godfrey Higgins, Charles Étienne Brasseur de Bourbourg and Augustus Le Plongeon, alluding instead to possible contacts with extraterrestrial life. New Age is a range of spiritual or religious practices and beliefs which rapidly grew in Western society during the early 1970s. The Maya calendar is a system of calendars used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica and in many modern communities in the Guatemalan highlands, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. 2012 Doomsday Prediction
The 2012 phenomenon was a range of eschatological beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events would occur on or around 21 December 2012. This date was regarded as the end-date of a 5,126-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, and festivities took place on 21 December 2012 to commemorate the event in the countries that were part of the Maya civilization (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador), with main events at Chichén Itzá in Mexico and Tikal in Guatemala. Harmonic Convergence
The Harmonic Convergence is the name given to the world's first synchronized global peace meditation, which occurred on August 16–17, 1987. This event also closely coincided with an exceptional alignment of planets in the Solar System. Although the event had been predicted by author Tony Shearer in his book ''Lord of the Dawn'' (1971), the principal organizers of the Harmonic Convergence event were spouses José Argüelles and Lloydine Burris Argüelles via the Planet Art Network (PAN), a peace movement they founded in 1983.
