Tony Oxley (boxer)
Anthony Oxley (1942-2015), was a male international boxer who competed for England, a national boxing coach and international security officer. He fought as Tony Oxley. Boxing career Oxley was effectively the National champion in 1971 after winning the 1971 bantamweight England Boxing National Amateur Championships, ABA championships. He represented England at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games, England in the 54 kg bantamweight division, at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. He also won the Royal Navy and Combined Services championships. Coaching career In 1974 he was appointed the Royal Navy coach and an England coach the following year. Between 1978 and 1982 his team won five back-to-back Combined Services championships and five ABA titles. England Boxing National Amateur Championships
The England Boxing National Amateur Championships previously known as the ABA Championships is the premier boxing tournament hosted annually by England Boxing. The Championships are 'open' class: any Boxing, boxer who is registered with a club registered with England Boxing (aged over 17 years by the 1 October) can enter. History The inaugural Championships were held (over one day) on 18 April 1880 at St James Hall, London at four weight categories: Featherweight (57 kg), Lightweight (60 kg), Middleweight (75 kg), and Heavyweight (91 kg). 1884 saw the introduction of a fifth weight category (Bantamweight, 54 kg). In 1920 three additional weight categories were introduced taking it to 8 weight categories in all. These extra weights were: Flyweight (51 kg), Welterweight (69 kg), and Light heavyweight (81 kg). 1970 British Commonwealth Games
The 1970 British Commonwealth Games (Scottish Gaelic: Geamannan a 'Cho-fhlaitheis Bhreatainn 1970) were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 16 to 25 July 1970. This was the first time the name British Commonwealth Games was adopted, the first time metric units rather than imperial units were used in all events, and also the first time the games were held in Scotland. Also, these games saw the first unique Games trademark logo: an emblem showing the Games emblem intertwined with a St Andrews Cross and a thistle. They were followed by the 1970 Commonwealth Paraplegic Games for wheelchair athletes. Host selection In August 1966, the bid vote was held in Jamaica.
